Do we even do "porras" when it comes to "Lotería Primitiva"? I didn't even know that.

(la) Lotería Primitiva Sweepstakes
https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/spanish-english...
(= juego) sweep ⧫ sweepstake
"La Lotería Primitiva" (Sweepstakes) is the standard 6/49 Lotto (6 balls and a powerball, if you will). It was created by the Loterias y Apuestas del Estado, the Spanish state-run lottery, one of the oldest in the world. The first draw carried out by the Spanish lottery took place in 1985 (after having been prohibited for over a century). One denomination, “The Primitive”, pays homage to the Spanish Lotto created in 1763 and which was replaced in 1812 by the standard Lotto as we now it today. I would leave "Lotería Primitiva" in Spanish with an explanatory note as I would certainly not use "Primitive Lottery".

@ Neilmac: I am writing here as unfortunately there is not enough space for additional remarks. I respect your opinions as far as "porra" is concerned and yes, "pool" is probably more the intended meaning. However, as far as "Lotería Primitiva", I would leave this in Spanish and use an explanatory note. That is the point I would like to make. Regards.

: People who pool their cash to place bets are making group bets = betting as a group (=pool). It's not necessarily a sweepstake, which is a specific type lottery,

Thanks Neil. However, "porra" is not a group bet according to 2 other well-known dictionaries which have been included here. https://www.proz.com/kudoz/english-to-spanish/idioms-maxims-... ("betting pool" may work here!).

Lottery group purchase
According to the definition in the DRAE: "Juego en que varias personas apuestan dinero a un resultado, número, etc., de modo que quien acierta se lleva todo el dinero apostado."
Translated here by Google:
"Game in which several people bet money on a result, number, etc., so that whoever hits takes all the money wagered."

There are several ways to describe this type of group purchase ("porra"). Instead of one person betting, people form a syndicate, club or group /etc,).
"In Skybet Group Betting, users can band together into a team of between two and 50 members.

Something similar occurs in Spain's national lottery, where instead of buying a single "décimo" ticket, people club together and by a whole ticket (= ten décimos), or even groups of numbered tickets.

NB: as I see it, a sweepstake is just another type of lottery. However, a "porra" (club, syndicate or group) is a specific type of bet. The people involved might bet on Bonoloto, la Primitiva, Lotería Nacional, Euromillones... and conceivably also dog and horse racing.

I suppose you could call a "porra" a betting syndicate, although for me that expression conjures up an image of big bucks, the Mafia, betting millions, not just a bunch of students or pensioners or neighbours grouping a few cents together to place a bet as a group.
