Definition / notes:When you have heart failure, it doesn’t mean that your heart has stopped beating. It means that you heart isn’t pumping blood as it should. The heart keeps working, but the body’s need for blood and oxygen isn’t being met. When this happens, blood backs up into the veins and causes fluid to build up. This causes swelling in feet, ankles, and legs, and may also build up in the lungs. Some signs of congestive heart failure include shortness of breath, especially when lying down; tired, run-down feeling; swelling in feet, ankles and legs; weight gain from fluid buildup; and confusion or can’t think clearly.
