me, too May 9, 2009

I was confused, since I do outsource work, but I replied, telling "mary" that she had better identify herself, and give the proper PO number before I send any dough.
Then, a colleague on a local professional group list mentioned that he had received this same precise message, and I determined that it was, indeed, just an attempt at trickery.
I have canceled her invoice and notified paypal. as well.

Incidentally, yes, the message does look genuine, because it is an invoice "properly" generated via paypal, it just doesn't correspond to any work that any of us sent out.

A nuisance, but . . . May 9, 2009

I have a hard enough time collecting for legitimate work that it's hard to imagine even a large outsourcer will fall for this scam.

Keep reporting May 10, 2009

Good idea is to tell other colleagues, on other forums and lists.

I woke up this morning to one. Being a small business and knowing my team intimately, I started wondering if I was senile

Reported it to PayPal, too.

Who Is Mary Translator? Identity theft? May 10, 2009

I am hellishly nosy. Googled the first part of the email address and came up with one Maryana Nazarenko, who happens to be a colleague. I am afraid her identity might have been used to try and commit freud. I have emailed her already, but if any of you know her personally, please alert her to the fact.

A client received it May 10, 2009

And she put my e-mail address in copy of her reply to that 'Mary', and mentioning my full name in the body of the e-mail, saying that she doesn't work with any 'Mary' except me.

I'm a bit afraid that this person might try this scam again using my name and my address now

I got a strange message May 10, 2009

I got a strange instant message in proz this morning of someone who called herself (sic) linderbaby - misslinder..
She was interested in frienship.. BUT she asked me to answer her back by email...

I checked her profile - it's brand new, no info, location US. Her email address: ***@yahoo.co.uk.

Then I saw this warning. Could this kind of message be related to the scam?

Would this be a way someone may get your email address and use it - just

I got the same message May 10, 2009

I reported it immediately to Proz staff, and they sent me the following message a couple of hours ago:

"Thanks very much for reporting this. I have blocked this person from the site, but please let me know if you continue to receive unwanted email through your profile, and thanks for helping to make the site more secure for everyone!"

Anyhow, I don't think the 2 things are related; "linderbaby"'s message sounded more like solicitation... the message that prompted this thread poses IMO a much bigger risk, since the person is asking for money upfront and the possibility of someone being caught off-guard and sending it is not too farfetched.

Greetings
Andrea

Yes, I got that too. As said though, that was merely a nuisance. This PayPal scam was actually dangerous.

same request May 10, 2009

I got the same request today from "mary" and thanks for posting your messages, so I know I'm not alone:)

I also keep getting some strange e-mails with the job offers sent from my own address (!) offering the job for Italian speaking translators with some other e-mails mentioned in the message (quote: "Бюро переводов имеет несколько вакансий на должность переводчика, итальянский язык, переводы устны

Никаких оплат или инвестиций с вашей стороны не требуются.

Another address mentioned in another letter with almost the same contents - [email protected]

This is a scam and unfortunately I don't know where to report such things.

explanation of these scam emails May 10, 2009

The names they use are generally fakes. Generally these scammers do not actually know your paypal account number or even your name or email address. If you respond to them you potentially give them information (your email address and anything else you have in the email, including footer/signature info at the bottom of your emails).

There is no good reason to respond to them. Their messages are generally sent en masse just to see who "bites". What you should do:

Report the email with full header information to paypal and to the email provider of the scammer (e.g. send it to "[email protected]" "[email protected]" etc.)

The email provider will usually cancel their account as will paypal.

Never sign into any website through an email like this (see "phishing"): If you have concerns about your bank account or paypal account, go to the account the way you normally would (e.g. your favourites, or typing the address directly into your browser).

Yes, I did receive it. May 10, 2009

I received it from an anonymous person listing some 20 USD. My outsourced work (which is few and far between) has been settled several months ago and have my records ready. Also my PayPal account never listed this "payment due". So, I only deleted it.

Hi every one I am Maryana Nazarenko May 10, 2009

And was very surprised to find out about such matter, that my login is being used by someone else.
First thing is that I don't have PayPal account as I am .located in Ukraine and as far as I know Pay Pal prohibits the ukrainians to create pay pal accounts. Secondly, I do not use gmail mail server so do not have mail adress registered at Google. So it is not me 1000% percents

Genuine PayPal message May 10, 2009

Stefania Williams wrote:

Just one thing: usually, the messages from Paypal have my name, and their logo, but this just had the email address.

The PayPal message from Marytranslator was a genuine PayPal message though, and going to my PayPal account listed it as an actual request for payment.
As Uldis' message shows, they're now at least aware of the problem...

Nice to hear from you Maryana and sorry to see your alias abused like that!!
I'm sure that if it was really you, you would have bothered to find a fake name! Hope the matter won't affect you any more than that.

Remove Paypal email address from your profile? May 10, 2009

I received the same email from "Mary". The only place I have listed to use Paypal, and the only place I have listed the email address I use for this purpose is: Proz.com.

Unfortunately a quick Google search for Paypal + my name also reveals that I use Paypal.

The solution: Remove the email address from your profile. In this way the spoofers won't find it.

I will also remove the email address in Paypal, and change to a new one. Then it will be more difficult to track down the address.

Should have done this ages ago.

And back to the profile: The Proz people should change the Paypal function to make sure the email address does not show. I know this might be impossible, but as long as the spoofer use their time to browse through our profiles to "collect" money the current system is just not good enough.
