Hello,

I have just upgraded from Studio 2009 to 2014. Now I'm faced with the IMPO HUGE problem of activating the product and getting it running.

I need to ask the following questions (possibly already aswered, but any answer will be much appreciated):
1. Can I keep and use both 2009 and 2014 on the same PC?
2. Is it true that I don't have to uninstall 2009 before I install 2014?
3. Do I have to return the license of 2009 before activating 2014? Would t... See more

4. How would Trados Suite 2007 (which I absolutely need to keep using) be affected by any license return (SDL Trados 2007 Suite Freelance - Free with version 2009)?

From the above, you might deduce that I am not the most well-informed individual in the world as regards Trados licencing and activation procedures, but really, my goal isn't to be well-informed, just to get the products working for good! I really consider the whole SDL procedure to be user-unfriendly (even hostile). Also, in the past, after a HD reformatting, when I had to ask help from the SDL online chat support, my request wasn't particularly welcome by their rep. In my mind, when you set up a difficult mechanism to protect your copyright, then you should be prepared to support your clients, even more when you know you are dealing with professionals.

Yes. They use different licensing mechanisms, but they can technically (see point 3.) run together separately on the same machine.

Yes. But again, see point 3.

If you purchase a license for Studio 2014, as opposed to upgrading your license, then you will own both versions of the software and can use them concurrently on the same machine, or on different machines... whatever you like.
If you upgrade your license then you are in effect replacing one with the other. So you are asked to return your 2009 license in order to generate the 2014 license as a replacement. technically however you don't have to return the 2009 license and you can continue to run 2009 on the same computer it is currently installed on for as long as you wish. But if you need to move computers, or reinstall the current one, then you will find that 2009 cannot be licensed again.
So, upgrade and in terms of licensing you only own one product. Purchase a new license and you own two.

It won't be. You own Trados 2007 and even though it was probably an upgrade we made the decision not to take this away from any user who owned it already because of the differences between the Trados and Studio, and because Studio 2009 heavily relied on Trados 2007 for working with legacy files. This is not the case anymore.

On your past experience. If you have a problem with licensing then don't use the live chat as this only takes you to a sales line. The best solution is to use the Knowledgebase and log a case with the licensing support team via the solution finder. Go to the Knowledgebase;

Then go to the tab called Solution Finder ( http://kb.sdl.com/?cid=23&tab=sf ) and now go here;

Licensing Problems
- I use SDL Trados Studio / SDL Passolo – 2011 or 2014
-- I need to have my license reset

Pick the correct route for you and if appropriate you will be presented with a form that you can fill in to generate a support request and you will be contacted, normally within a day.

Also use the Chrome browser to log the case if you have it; you'll get more success in completing the form, and make sure your email address is entered correctly or nobody will be able to get back in touch with you.
