I figure my portable computer is good enough to keep in touch now that I can find WiFi signals in so many places, and if I am in a country with a lot of Cyber Cafés, then I can make it with a flash drive with the files I need on it and use any computer.

Plus the cell phone, of course.

I couldn't agree more. With my cheap cell phone, and my laptop, I don't feel I need to pay an expensive service for now. I'm usually traveling between interpreting appointments, and when I have the chance (and the time), I stop at a Cyber Café, check my mail, work a bit, and go on. That's as much as I need my technology when I'm not home

No need Feb 18, 2008

I have a regular "dumb phone" that handles my email just fine (including viewing documents in most regular formats) and that's all I really need it to do. When I leave the computer it is a bliss NOT to be available and when I leave my desktop computer for longer periods (days) I have my laptop with me (I LOVE my laptop).

I neither want nor need a "smart phone" and I actually somewhat pity those who are caught in the conception that they always need to be available. It's a joy beyon

Blackberry Pearl Feb 18, 2008

I have a Pearl, which is sleek and smart enough to be a mobile and an email phone, not like the original Blackberries which were pretty big. I get quite a good deal with O2 in the UK for emails on my Blackberry and use the internet browser function quite a lot (especially to solve arguments of the "I'm sure the Nile is the longest river in the world" vs. the "I'm sure it's the Amazon" type, or for sneaky googles during pub quizzes!).

I couldn't be without it now, it certainly means

I couldn't be without it now, it certainly means I'm a lot happier about going out for an hour or so and knowing that I can reply to something quickly by saying "I'll be back in an hour".

Totally addicted! Feb 18, 2008

I've always been proud that I had never done drugs... but again here I am and I can't lie about it anymore ha!ha!ha!
Since I travel a lot I love my Pearl. When I'm on I-95 for hours at a time the Blackberry puts my mind at ease; not once did two of my most important clients e-mail me while I was driving. The Pearl is sleak, it fits in a small pocket and it gives me what I love most: flexibility. I don't have to check my screen every 30 min or take the laptop with me; plus, we all have erra

It's nice to go shopping or just hang out without having to rush to a wi-fi spot.

Cheers from a Blackberry lover! : )

Convenient but doesn't have my needed input languages Feb 18, 2008

My laptop is quite heavy, and I'd rather not lug it with me everywhere. I love being able to read and answer client emails on such a small and convenient device. However, the Blackberry doesn't support Swedish or Norwegian as an input language, so I'll need to find another way to input the special characters.

lets me go out without missing work Feb 18, 2008

I have a Pearl too, it's not much more expensive than a mobile phone with a business tariff, and saves me lots of hassle looking for internet cafes, paying for wireless in airports, etc. Before when I had no work I didn't feel I could go out and take advantage of it, in case I missed job offers, and now I can go and relax, without worrying about coming home to a great job I've missed, or getting a call and having to rush home to confirm the email. Well worth the €20 or so a month I spend on it (although roaming tariffs are still pretty high unfortunately). I'm sure I could do a lot more with it, but haven't got around to working out its capabilities.
Unfortunately, I don't yet have many clients who will happily wait until I get around to answering them to allocate the job, they'll just pass it on to the next translator.

Oh, and I have no idea about the woman thing, maybe just more female translators?

If the modern technology makes life easier why shouldn't we take advantage of it?
Again, go for it!

NO, because... Feb 18, 2008

... they are too fiddly for my big sausage fingers and people can use them to cheat in my pub quiz...
As I speak we are hanging up the BARRED sign outside the pub with Rebecca's photo on it - "sneaky googlers" beware

Not Yet but... Feb 18, 2008

I dont have a blackberry yet because I'm very confuse with all the new technologies available for email reception. There is so many choices!

1) normal cellphone with email fonction
2) blackberry
3) smartphone

and maybe even more

If someone can help me to understand the difference between all of them, I'll be very happy!

holidays and breaks Feb 18, 2008

Catherine Shepherd wrote:

Myself and a friend cover each other when away from our desks, this means when we take a break it's (almost always, almost really) a break, cos the other's screening the mails, yet we never miss out on anything important: if something really important comes in, we let the other know by mobile.

The only problem is that in the last few years there are a few days when we are away together (at conferences):-)

Having a blackberry would mean really not having a break. First it was mobiles to tie one to one's job when not at home/in the office, then it was laptops, now it's blackberries....

It's so difficult to have a break too, as a freelancer. That said, I've been thinking about it:-)

computer-free time Feb 18, 2008

Not working means not working.

Wow, luxury, couldn't agree more ... I do a lot of big editing jobs precisely cos I can sit in a café and do a last round on paper away from the computer ... recently I became obsessed with going on the road for a month to get away from the computer, and, in fact, I'm trying to plan my life to be able to have a few 100%-technology-free weeks a year:-)

First thing I do always, when I get up, when I get in, when I get back: check mail:-(

Clients on the other side of the world Feb 18, 2008

All of my clients are on the other side of the world, and I surely won't check my e-mail during the night. By the way, they already know what I can accept, so they do not even need a quick answer. Therefore, I really don't need a Blackberry, I think that it's really useful only for people that are in the stock exchange market and similar. Plus I'm tired of technology too, and when I am not in front of my laptop I am definitely doing something else, more fun, and I don't care about incoming e-mai... See more
