Over the years my best paid jobs were two huge translations of e-courses on the legal field for a direct client. Transcreation and creative translations are also well paid…

I have a flat rate for every possible field. The only times I charge a (much) higher rate is when texts consistently lack context or in the case of spare part lists and the like. But those are rare occasions and most of the time I don't get the job because of the much higher rate I propose (which is a good thing, because texts without context are a pain to translate and spare part lists are utterly boring to translate). | | | Tom in London United Kingdom Local time: 09:43 Member (2008) Italian to English

In my specialised field/s, for direct clients. | | | I don't know | Sep 22, 2023 |
I specialize and work in a few fields and have agreed on pretty consistent rates with my clients. While there are certainly cases in which I do work outside my comfort zone, I simply refuse to take on certain fields (e.g. Medical) for complete lack of knowledge (and, to be completely honest, interest).

I don't work in legal, finance, e-commerce, games or media, and only very occasionally in marketing. To compare rates, would a translator not need to work in all these areas? And would that not be impossible, as finance experts would be rubbish at translating games and most legal texts, to pick just some examples?

Proficiency in other fields (and as many fields as possible) is actually really helpful when translating games. Some agencies will ask their translators whether they are experienced in certain fields or with certain franchises, but at the end of the day, one can always end up translating sports management games, shooters and role-playing games with all kinds of different content. As a specific example, it was just this week that I actually declined a new project, since the PM specifically asked for translators familiar with Chinese mythology.

In my experience, this is not a relevant factor at all. It all comes down to the local market of your clients. So for instance Swiss agencies will pay much (much) more than Italian agencies, entirely regardless of the field, simply because their Swiss clients are willing to pay fees that in Italy would be inconceivable. | | | Strange question | Sep 22, 2023 |
Advertising. Translation rates are generally low here in Italy but for advertising jobs one can one earn €0.50 or so per word for a big job or €1,00 - €1.50 per word for a short one. If anyone can tell me a sector that pays more, I'd love to hear. Advertising can be difficult, and hardly worth it at the beginning, so it takes time to get started but it does get easier (and extremely profitable) over time.
Direct client job (higher) vs agency's assignments (lower), any field, especially pet care

Unfortunately, spelling and linguistic errors are all too common in ProZ polls. I once offered to screen the poll questions and answers (for free) to correct such errors, but of course I received absolutely no response.
I wonder what kind of impression this makes on people who may be visiting the site for the first time. | | | I don't know | Sep 23, 2023 |
I am dubious if it should be the field to be taken into account when it comes to paying higher or lower. I would rather think of the country and client from which the assignment is provided. Countries have different opinions about translation rates. Then it counts if you get the assignment from the direct client or from an agency. | | | Pages in topic: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: In your eperience, which is the best paid field in the transaltion market?
