Source text - English Odin’s Tablet! This mysterious artifact’s name only hints at the layers of mystery, history, and contradictory tales that surround it.
Pirates whisper that once, the All-Father used it to seize control of a terrifying band of ghostly hunters, who chase their quarry without respite or mercy across the skies on cold winter nights... The Wild Hunt! No-one knows whence they come or where they disappear to at sunrise; some swear by stone and bone that Odin himself had to banish them, and that it was no easy task.
Now, like so many ancient stories, this tale is firmly in the realm of myth – a tale to make children behave. But say one thing for both myths and ghosts: they tenaciously hang onto existence in one form or another, even if it’s only memory. That’s why, to this day, pirates far and wide celebrate this time of year by building a replica of Odin’s Tablet, collecting hidden and far-scattered pieces of it. Perhaps it helps to ward off evil spirits... And yet – something is strange, this year.
Captain William Paine, a world-renowned freebooter, swashbuckler, and general Casanova, was also a believer in the Wild Hunt. He had lost his beloved wench Mary to a raging dockside fire, and in his grief, he turned to taverns, and to rum – and there, the legend became, for him, fact. He had been told of too many strange midnight sightings of clouds that could not be clouds, of wrathful spirits, of the ghostly din of a horn, of terrified prey fleeing from star to star, to dismiss them all as fantasy or fairytale – no matter how many cups of grog had been consumed by the tale-teller. Somewhere, somehow, Paine was certain that the Hunt was real. The Hunt was power – perhaps even over death.
It was a long, strange search, but Paine finally found the greatest of treasures. Other corsairs reacted with ridicule or pity if he revealed the meticulously-wrapped fragment of marble to them, but Paine knew in his heart that what he held was no random carved rock: it was a shard of Odin’s Tablet itself. The original, not a holiday replica!
And so Paine made his way to a hidden cove on a deserted, swampy island, and there he danced and howled out the ritual that eighteen paid men had died to discover, shrieking the alien words into the teeth of a rising wind. Thunder roared! Lightning crashed! The crackling of his bonfire gave way to sudden silence – and then peace.
After an eternity (or was it an instant?), Paine opened his eyes to find that he had been right: the Wild Hunt existed! But what of his lost Mary? Would these hunters track her down?
Toy not with powers you do not understand, mateys. The Wild Hunt, led by the sinister Krampus, now has eighteen new members, and a new victim to chase...

Il se murmure parmi les pirates qu'un jour, le dieu aux mille surnoms s'en servit pour prendre le contrôle d'un groupe terrifiant de chasseurs fantômes qui poursuivaient leurs proies sans répit ni merci à travers les cieux des nuits glaciales d'hiver... La chasse sauvage ! Nul ne sait d'où ils viennent ni où ils disparaissent le jour venu. D'aucuns jurent leurs grands dieux qu'Odin lui-même dut les bannir et que la tâche ne fut pas aisée.
Aujourd'hui, comme toutes les vieilles légendes, ce conte est fermement ancré dans le domaine des mythes. C'est une histoire qu'on raconte aux enfants pour les faire obéir. Mais on peut dire une chose des mythes et des fantômes : ils trouvent toujours un moyen ou un autre d'exister, même si ce n'est que dans les mémoires. C'est pourquoi encore aujourd'hui, les pirates des quatre coins du globe célèbrent cette époque de l'année en construisant une réplique de la tablette d'Odin, dont ils éparpillent les morceaux pour ensuite les rassembler. Cette coutume est censée éloigner les esprits maléfiques... Et pourtant, cette année, il y a quelque chose de bizarre.
Le capitaine William Paine, un flibustier, aventurier et don Juan de renommée internationale, croyait lui aussi à la chasse sauvage. Il avait perdu sa bien-aimée dans un incendie et tenté d'oublier son chagrin dans le rhum et les tavernes. C'est là que la légende devint pour lui, réalité. Il avait entendu trop d'étranges récits de nuages qui n'avaient pas l'air de nuages, d'esprits vengeurs, de sons de cornes fantomatiques et de proies terrifiées s'enfuyant d'étoile en étoile, pour continuer à croire qu'il ne s'agissait que de on-dit et de superstitions. Peu importe le nombre de verres ingurgités par le conteur.
Paine était persuadé que la chasse existait quelque part. La chasse était synonyme de pouvoir, peut-être même celui de vaincre la mort.
Les recherches furent longues et semées d’embûches, mais Paine finit par trouver le plus grand des trésors. Le fragment de marbre précieusement enveloppé n'inspira que dérision et pitié aux autres corsaires, mais Paine savait en son for intérieur qu'il ne s'agissait pas d'un simple morceau de roche gravé : c'était un éclat de la tablette d'Odin. La tablette d'origine, pas une réplique de pacotille !
Fort de cette croyance, Paine se rendit sur la crique perdue d'une île déserte couverte de marécages. Là-bas, il accomplit le rituel que dix-huit hommes avaient découvert au prix de leur vie. Il dansa et hurla la formule en langue antique dans le froid mordant d'un vent rugissant. Le tonnerre retentit ! Des éclairs déchirèrent la nuit ! Son feu de joie crépita, et soudain, plus rien.
Après un temps infini (ou n'était-ce qu'un instant ?), Paine ouvrit les yeux pour découvrir qu'il avait vu juste : la chasse sauvage était bien réelle ! Mais qu'en était-il de sa défunte Mary ? Ces chasseurs allaient-ils la traquer ?
Ne jouez pas avec des pouvoirs qui dépassent votre entendement, matelots. La chasse sauvage, menée par le sinistre Krampus, est maintenant forte de dix-huit nouveaux membres, et ils ont une victime dans leur collimateur...
