The Nuclear Engineering Program (NEP) is a program in the Virginia Tech Mechanical Engineering Department. It is a rapidly expanding program with the faculty, resources, facilities, and support necessary to become a premier program. The Virginia Tech NEP will offer a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program addressing nuclear power, nuclear security and safeguards, medical physics, nuclear materials, plasma science, and nuclear policy.



Some technical literature could be right up the alley of someone with a mechanical engineering degree. Who knows?

实际上，这段文字涉及的是焊接工艺，属于金属加工范畴，与核反应工艺本身并无直接关系。这种焊接工艺既可用于核工业，也可用于化学工业、炼油工业等其它工业。所以，并不是非得核专家来翻译不可。凡是在焊接工艺方面具有一定专业知识的人，不管他是英语专业出身、还是焊接专业出身，或是其它技术专业出身，都可以翻。具有机械工程学位的，当然更可以翻。我个人认为，只要对需要翻译的文件基本上感到 comfortable，这个项目就可以接。对于其中让自己感到 uncomfortable 的内容，则可以通过各种方式去搞懂。

翻译技术文件究竟应该由英语专业出身、还是由技术专业出身的人来翻译？这个问题在此论坛上已经讨论过多次，公说公有理，婆说婆有理。恐怕再争论一百年，也不可能达成一致意见。也许一百年之后，翻译这一行已经消亡，那就不用再争了。

ysun先生的话是有道理的。我个人也觉得，主要是在接项目前，对个人的时间，专业，能力等等先进行一下自我评估，如果感觉有信心，就可以接项目。
不过，从另外一个角度说，虽然我们只有通过学习才能得到进步，但是大多数的翻译者都面临着时间压力，必须在限定的时间内交稿。如果时间太短，项目又的确太难，需要自己花费很多时间去进行调查和学习，那么我建议最好先不要接这个项目。这是对自己，也对客户负责的态度。
总而言之，我觉得应该只接自己有信心做好的项目。在工作中我也曾经遇到一些对我来说完全隔行，自知难以胜任的项目，那么我会先向这个翻译公司介绍我的专长，然后坦率告诉他们这个项目不适合我，也许还推荐其他同事来做。我觉得这样反而会让对方更信任你，因为他们知道你对工作态度严谨，注重质量。
