How do you decide how much to charge extra?

25 percent over my regular fee for rush jobs, 50 percent over my regular fee for an express job.

Speaking of rush translations, I would like to share a recent experience. Yesterday, a very good and long-standing client contacted me asking for a quotation. The final client needed a rush translation of 2 contracts (18,500 words in total) in 1 or 2 days. After I finished laughing, I decided to make the quotation, as it was a very good client, and although long, the work was super easy. After I finished laughing, I decided to make the quotation, as it was a very good client, and although long, the work was super easy. I offered them to do it in 3 days with a surcharge of 30%, and demanded an advance payment of 50% to start the work. I think it was a bargain, considering that I would have to eat can soup and sleep only 4 hours a day for 3 days, and would not be able to prepare properly for Christmas next week. Do you know how much translation agencies charge their clients? That would be an interesting piece of information, since there have been discussions among translators saying that it differs from agency to agency.
