pangs / anguish (of horror)

As the disease developed, our pangs/anguish of horror increased due the the awareness of the imminent disaster".

fear of impending doom

This seems to be an emotional response to physical illness they are discussing in a clinical way. Of course, many colorful words would fit the bill, but what they are talking about, I think, is raw, naked, fear.
Example sentence:

"As the disease progressed, the fear of impending doom grew in response to the perception of irreversible misery."
