Muriel Vasconcellos Nov 15, 2020:
@ Mark Your explanation confirms that "suspension" is just a break. That seems to be a country-specific usage. As I mentioned earlier, it's not in Roberts' Rules, which are used internationally. 'Adjournment' is the only safe translation.
Mark Robertson Nov 15, 2020:
Suspend/Adjourn The rules of the UK House of Commons include the following:
"Power of the Speaker to adjourn House or suspend sitting
In case of grave disorder arising in the House the Speaker may, if he thinks it necessary to do so, adjourn the House without putting any question, or suspend the sitting for a time to be named by him."

Muriel Vasconcellos Nov 13, 2020:
Conclusion Hi Maria Iracema,
I stand by the answer I posted. As far as I know, the only accepted English term in international meetings is 'adjournment'. Though "levantamento" may have limited use in Portuguese, IMO, this should be its proper translation in English.
Maria Iracema Martin (asker) Nov 13, 2020:
@ Muriel Conclusion? Muriel, what is you conclusion, please? Would you translate the TU "adjournment of the session"? Thanks.
Muriel Vasconcellos Nov 13, 2020:
Adjourning the session Under Roberts' Rules, when a session is adjourned, it ends. Unfortunately, the dictionary definitions of "adjourn" and "suspend" are unclear when it comes to running a meeting under Roberts' Rules, which are followed internationally as well as in the United States. The glossary that I cited in my answer is from Canada. In the many international meetings where I have served as a translator or précis writer, the final item on the session's agenda is always "Adjournment." I have never seen or heard of "suspension" of a session in those contexts.
Muriel Vasconcellos Nov 13, 2020:
Suspending the session Under Roberts' Rules, there is no such thing as suspending a session, though a search will show that the term is sometimes used to refer to taking a break and resuming the session later. For example, with a board that I serve on which follows Roberts' Rules, we "suspend" the regular session to go into executive session to discuss a sensitive topic, asking everyone else to leave the room. Once the executive session ends, we resume the regular session until the agenda is completed. The final item on the agenda is "Adjournment." Mario Freitas Nov 13, 2020:
@ Muriel But when a session is suspended, it is also adjourned, since it's not cancelled.
Muriel Vasconcellos Nov 12, 2020:
FWIW In Spanish, "levantar la sesión" clearly means to adjourn it, not suspend it. From a quick search, I couldn't find much evidence for the Portuguese cognate in any context.

adjournment of the session

I did find the verb phrase in a multilingual Canadian glossary of parliamentary terms, which shows the following:

English: adjourn a meeting
French: lever la séance; clôturer la séance
Spanish: levantar la reunión; levantar la sesión
Portuguese: levantar a reunião; encerrar a reunião

The source is:

Terminology Bulletin Bulletin de terminologie Boletín de ...www.bibliotheque.assnat.qc.ca › AffichageFichierPDF
levantar la reunión; levantar la sesión levantar a ... the adjournment motion (pl.) débat sur la motion d' ... abrir a reunião, abrir a sessão; declarar aberta a sessão.

I suspect the term is rare in Portuguese, but the glossary supports the fact that it exists, and it's the term that the Asker is stuck with finding an English equivalent for.
