No other context unfortunately There are only conjectures. My client thinks the Germans may have advanced faster than the people evacuating on carts and tractors, so they found themselves surrounded on enemy territory. So Sofia's answer seems to fit best.

@TM We (you and me) do not know when these reminescences were recorded. The children's play idiom might have been learned by the informant from his/her grandchildren.

Not to be a critic, but... Methink, что Вы, коллега, тут несколько нарушаете святой принцип историзма в оценке прошлых событий. Иными словами, весь этот ужосссс с ниточками и шишками в лоб мертвецам появился значительно позже, чем то, что описывается в сиих мемуарах. Но поскольку этот казалось бы очевидный принцип ныне нарушают все, кому не лень (а особенно некоторые - но не будем о грустном), то с Вас вроде и взятки гладки.

Но все равно, спасибо Вам. Я вот тут сижу и думаю за утренном кофием - это как же меня угораздило, что в свое время весь этот кошмар, высосанный из немытых пальцев Эйнштейнами от дошкольного образования, благолучно мимо меня прошел. Наверное Бог меня хранил. Или Генеральный секретарь:)

Seriously though, I don't think it makes any sense to split hairs over what this may mean. What we have here is apparently a case of poor writing by someone with insufficient education, which, considering the time period in question, should have been pretty common. I'd just phrase it in standard enough English along the lines of what Sofia suggested. There's no need to get all exotic here.
