Spanish term

campo ('en el campo', 'fuera del campo'

Spanish to English Art/Literary Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts)
I'm still editing an academic paper on silence in photography. It's for publication in a journal in US English.

I am wondering about "en el campo" and "fuera del campo" in the following:

The author's draft English translation has "on camera" and "off camera". I am wondering whether that is the correct technical rendering in English or whether it might be something like "in shot" and "out of shot".

I would be grateful for your help with this, especially from those with technical knowledge of the field. Huge thanks to all.

@all Thank you so very much for your input. I've just returned to this section (hence the delayed response!). I'll try and work each option into the text and see if that sheds more light on it. The queried text is woven in and out of two or three paragraphs.Thank you again!

further examples I've just found campo and fuera del campo mentioned again further on as follows:

For the above extract the author's draft translation is contains a field and forms an off-camera, then reverts to in-camera and off-camera, so it's not totally consistent in any case.

field (in field/out of field)

As in "field of vision".
I'm not a professional photographer, but to me "on/off camera" sounds more like moviemaking, whereas "in/out of shot" could be in either still photography or movies.
Example sentence:

When an image quickly moves out of field of vision, but an afterimage briefly remains...

Thank you so much for your input.
How would you distinguish between in/out of field, and in/out of shot? If there is a distinction to be made.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks so much to all. I chose this answer in the end because it worked in better around the other mentions of 'frame'. In fact I used in- and out-of-shot and worked field in where needed. Thank you again."

Frame (In frame, out of frame)

It will depend on the context if you need to say in frame or in the frame, but you have several examples below to guide you in this link. Here they talk about the frame, the space within the picture where you work. There is even a Frame within Frame photography where you create a frame with images, as shown in the link.

Campo.

Thank you so much for this Simone.
How would you distinguish from the sections that mention "encuadre"? Or does it not need a distinction in this instance?

agree Valeria Aguilar : I agree, you seem quite confident and the explanations make sense within the context.

the visual range

The camera lens has a visual range, capacity and spectrum which frames the vision for a photograph. Anything else which doesn't fit inside the camera lens visual capacity is outside of the visual field, range or spectrum and shall not appear in the photograph.
Example sentence:

Note from asker:
Thank you very much. That's very helpful.
