En un libro sobre pedagogía que fue publicado en 1923, en Iowa (EUA), aparece esta expresión que supongo es jerga. Aprecio mucho las sugerencias brindadas, y en especial, aquellas que pueda entender una comunidad heterogénea hispanohablante que reside en Estados Unidos.

"Little and big are just the words they ought to use, and any teacher who attempts to force upon them the more dignified words of older people only succeeds in making herself appear ridiculous in the eyes of sensible parents.
But notice again that the children are told to find the bottles which the teacher has set before them. This would imply that the bottles were lost or hidden. This hot-house teacher has probably read some where that it is wrong to say "I have got it," where mere possession is intended, as "I have got a book," for "I have a a book," and she has concluded from this that it is improper to use get and got under any circumstances. So instead of saying "John may get one of the bottles," or "which bottle did John get ?" she says "John may find one of the bottles," and which bottle did John find ?"
But the scholars are not through yet with this lesson in language, and before the close their teacher has them talking about "a large thick box," and "a small thin box." No doubt in the second lesson she will have developed their ideas and language to such an extent that she will have them talking about a large thick cellar, and a small thin room; and by the third lesson she will have devel- oped the ideas and language of their parents to such an extent that many of them will use some large, broad language about these very long, thin lessons."
