Danish term

mediering

Danish to English Social Sciences Architecture
I have run into this term before and never found a direct equivalent in English (that's not to say that none exists, but I just haven't found it yet). Until now, I have managed by translating it into 'communication', but today, that just won't do, so I would appreciate any help.

Context:

Discussion

564354352 (X) (asker) May 7, 2013:
A distinction Quote from the book 'A Vocabulary of Culture and Society' by Raymond Williams:

1. The political sense of intermediary action designed to bring about reconciliation or agreement;
2. The dualist sense, of an activity which expresses, either indirectly or deviously and misleadingly (and thus often in a falsely reconciling way), a relationship between otherwise separated facts and actions and experiences;
3. The formalist sense, of an activity which directly expresses otherwise unexpressed relations.
It can be said that each of these senses has a better word:
1. conciliation
2. ideology or rationalization
3. form

To round this off, I will go with the term 'mediation', but also refer to 'use of media' in the text.

Looks like it is 'mediation' I came across this interesting article about 'Processes of Mediation', which indicates that 'the use of a medium as a means of expression', be that a technology, a way of speaking or a choice of physical medium is actually referred to as 'mediation'. So, I stand corrected and enlightened. Thank you all for your contributions.

mediation

Is it not mediation? It's too early in the morning for me, so I'm struggling to put the rather abstract example in a better context in my mind, but I would be surprised if it wasn't mediation.
Note from asker:
I know it seems such an obvious solution, but I just cannot find any other definition for 'mediation' than words talking about 'making peace' between different parties, and that is clearly not what the Danish term means. So, no I don't think that 'mediation' can be used. But thanks for suggesting it, at least I'm not the only one who would like it to be that straightforward. :D
Peer comment(s):

disagree Charlesp : base is "medie" (not "mediere"). Mediation - a negotiation to resolve differences that is conducted by some impartial party. b) ...an attempt to effect a peaceful settlement between disputing nations.

semiotic mediation

According to Wikipedia (Swedish): Mediering är ett centralt begrepp inom ett sociokulturellt perspektiv.

When a search is done for the English translation, "semiotic mediation" is a term that shows up a lot.

Note from asker:
Hi Norskpro - I think this is one kind of mediation, but not the one that I was looking for. Semiotic refers to the choice of linguistic tools, whereas I was looking for something related to the choice of physical media. But thanks for the suggestion.

Betydning

Note from asker:
Thanks for definitions a) and b), Charles, very useful. In my context, it is definitely definition a) that applies. 'Mediering' is becoming an increasingly popular word amongst Danish academics, so I really hope someone knows how to render it in English.
Hi Charles - I would like to award the points to you as I found your answer most helpful in reaching a decision on this question. If you want the points, would you make an entry above, please, as apparently points cannot be given to comments.

Er ikke sikker på, at det drejer sig om kommunikationsmedier ... se link: http://www.studieportalen.dk/forums/Thread.aspx?id=418461
Note from asker:
Thanks Lise, but I think that still falls under Charles' definition c), doesn't it? Nothing to do with the choice of media in communication, which is what I am desperately looking for.
