English term

twilight industries

English Bus/Financial Economics NK
Hi,

I read in my Spanish-English dictionary, “industrias crepusculares = twilight industries” – but must confess I don't have a clue what twilight industries are in the first place.

Very grateful for any help,

Simon

declining industries

Yes, I know David has already said that, but I wanted to post this little quote:

And I recalled that it was similar to a term called Twilight Industry learned in basic economics. It simply describes any field of business that has past its glory days, and is now in a phase where it is stagnant, non-developing and on the verge of extinction.

fading, obsolete

Like some manufacturing areas in the US which are losing ground because of outsourcing ?

agree David Knowles : or "declining"

Thank you David. "Declining", in danger of going out of business for some economic reasons( lack of demand, competition, etc )

industries that are nearing the end of their life

like the car industry in the UK.

However, I think it also gets used for "shady" activities (activities carried out in the semi-darkness die to their illegal nature) such as black markets, prostitution etc

Sorry... due to their illegal nature

sunset industries

I don't know that there is any difference between these expressions, except that sunset is fairly common.
Perhaps twilight (starting to decline) is not as advanced as sunset (in the final stage of existence).
