French term

indexs

French to English Tech/Engineering Mining & Minerals / Gems Watchmaking
"Les cadrans sont noirs ou blancs avec des indexs et des chiffres arabes."

This is - hopefully - the last question from a set of press releases about a series of upmarket watches. I'm not sure what "indexs" is supposed to mean here and would appreciate any suggestions.

Many thanks

Ian

markers

The hour markers at 12 and 9 are applied Arabic numbers in steel. On the top of the face between 11 and 1 reads "Jeager-LeCoultre Automatic" in black text.

agree Gayle Wallimann : Yes, there are many references for markers on the net for both UK and US wristwatches.

hands

They are talking about the hands, or pointers, of the watch.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Patrick and Carol Collins : Definitely not the hands.

indexes

They mark the minutes. The numbers are only 12 3 6 and 9, and the rest are indexes.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Patrick and Carol Collins : This word is ofen erroneously used. Even so, the hour symbols (index in French) mark the hours and not the minutes. The circle of little lines marking the minutes is called the minute circle.

hour markers or hour symbols

These are the small lines, marks, sometimes diamonds, that mark the hours instead of numbers. Sometimes there are a combination of numerals and hour markers. The French companies often use this term in English too, but it is wrong. An index in English is a completely different watch part!
