"deployed" sounds too general From what Sergei writes about the film, that fighting has already begun, I think you need something more active/specific than "deployment," which can mean that a ship is cruising around in the waters of its assigned location, waiting to see if anything is going to happen. "Stood up" and "acted" leave it unclear as to what they did--maybe we don't know. (?) I think "set out" is excluded by the additional context Sergei provided--clearly they have already left port/base.

В док. фильме о войне предпочтительнее, конечно, военный термин, звучащий адекватно картинке: were deployed in the defense of the Motherland. Stood up - это скорее "встали", "поднялись" (на защиту) и так говорят о всем народе, стране, а не об Армии, Флоте

Это текст к советскому документальному фильму. Боевые действия уже идут, а фраза произносится в момент, когда по очереди показывают несколько кораблей, которые начинают стрелять.
