Spanish term

monta no fértil

Spanish to English Medical Livestock / Animal Husbandry Ultrasound in cats, reproductive system
Hi Kudozers,

Can you help with this term? It's taken from a book about ultrasound in cats, specifically a chapter on the reproductive system of females, written by and for vets.

Spanish Spanish to UK English, please.

"Se pueden observar casos de piometra en gatas de 1 a 10 años de edad (media 7 años) después de una *****monta no fértil****. La patogenia es similar a la de la perra, pero suele desarrollarse antes (1–4 semanas después del celo) y también puede desarrollarse secundaria a la administración exógena de progestágenos. Ecográficamente puede observarse el típico aspecto de dilatación del útero con presencia de contenido líquido."

Am I right in thinking it means something along the lines of "breeding attempts/penetration/copulation without insemination/fertilisation" ??
The book does not generally concern itself with breeding cats, purely ultrasound from a veterinary point of view.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or discussion.

Discussion

Charles Davis Sep 30, 2015:
@Neil What happens is that the female cat ovulates in response to vaginal stimulation. So if she mates with an infertile tom (which rarely happens), she may ovulate without being impregnated, go through all the hormonal rigmarole and have a phantom pregnancy, which she can't distinguish from the real thing. And that's when she can get pyometra (infected uterus).

I just had a quick look, not sure of there's a better term:

Note from asker:
Thanks Rachel, and Charles for confirming, as simple as that! Just didn't extract "non-fertile" from "no fértil", doh!
Peer comment(s):

agree Charles Davis : "Infertile mating" (or occasionally "breeding") is more common. Rare, because infertile toms don't tend to indulge. The poor female can't tell.

disagree philgoddard : Nothing to do with artificial insemination. Do you EVER look at the previous person's answer and think maybe he or she is right?

Speaks of ultrasound effect Mr Philgoddard.Failed insemination test is more like it.Cheers!
disagree Lisa McCarthy : You have obviously not read the context. Mentions nothing about artificial insemination. // Why can't you accept that you're wrong sometimes?

noted izabel??
disagree Taña Dalglish : Nothing to do with artificial insemination. Because ultrasonograhy (also known as diagnostic sonography-a diagnostic imaging technique based on the application of ultrasound) is mentioned, there is no relation/ref. to insemination (my husband is a vet!).
