Motor screening test (MOT)
The CANTABelect system confirms set-up items, as in the photo, and the subject performs this task using only the index finger of their more dominant hand.
As the press-pad is not used in this test, make sure the subject's finger does not enter the eye.

When the MOT start screen is displayed, the following will appear.
This is the computer you will be using from now. I will give you instructions. Are you ready?
Press k to start the test. Touch the x as they appear on the screen.
Demonstration
Follow me as I touch the x when it appears pink or green. If you touch correctly you will hear a melody. If you touch incorrectly you will not hear anything.
Please use the index finger of the hand in which you would normally write with. If you touch correctly the x will disappear. When it does so, remove your finger and wait for the next x to appear.
After the x has appeared three times the computer will display a 'Please wait' message.
Next, please instruct the subject as follows.
"Now it is your turn to try."
"Press k and the next set of x will be displayed."
Then, please say the following.
"When the x flashes, please touch it with the tip of your index finger."
If the subject touches the target but the x does not disappear, please say the following.
"Please press it carefully."
If the subject is confused about the procedure and is not touching the x correctly, please instruct as follows.
"Please use the tip of your index finger. Please press the (flashing) x."
"Even if you do not press hard, it will be okay just to touch it."
If the screen is not responding, instruct the subject to remove the finger from the screen and touch a second time. If they do not press harder, the test may not work.
If the subject is touching the x correctly, the test will end when they have touched the 10th x.
If the subject has made even one incorrect response, there will be a second chance to practice reaching the 10th x.
If the computer displays 'Please wait', instead of moving on to the next test, the following applies.
When 'Please wait' appears, the following is displayed.
If the subject continues to make incorrect responses, the score and the option to continue or terminate the test will be displayed.
If the test is ended, the second test will be displayed on the start screen.
The second test will begin. As before, when the x appears please touch the centre of it.
The next test in the system is PAL.
Pair Associates
Learning

When implementing this test, please do not refer to the items in the boxes as 'things'. This is so the subject does not get caught up in preconceptions with verbal labels. Please use the word 'pattern'.
2 patterns (At this level, this is an assessed practice to become accustomed to a pattern)
Before explaining instructions, this test is displayed.
Press the k bar on the keyboard and the 2 pattern set will begin.
A quick explanation.
6 boxes will appear. Boxes will open in a random order. In two of the boxes are patterns. Please remember which pattern is in which box.
When the patterns appear, pointing to them, say the following.
"There is a pattern…There is a different pattern."
Once all boxes have been opened, one pattern will be displayed on the centre of the screen.
Instructions.
Please touch the box which had that pattern.
When two patterns are displayed on the centre of the screen, instruct as follows.
"Which was the box that had that pattern inside? Which box had that pattern?"
It is also possible to instruct the subject as follows
"If you think the pattern is in there, please touch that box."
If the subject answers correctly, 'All correct' will be displayed on the screen so please say the following.
"Now we will do the same test. This time different patterns will appear."
2 patterns are displayed as assessed practice for the subject. If he/she answers correctly, the screen will display an 'All correct' message. Next, 3 patterns will appear.
If an error occurs:
If, during the practice, the subject makes a mistake the computer will not display an 'All correct' message directly after the practice. The box will open again to show where the pattern actually was.
When stopping the test, say the following
"It did not say you were correct. The computer will open the box again and show us where the pattern actually was."
So the examiner can make a follow up record of the number of times the subject performed the test, a mark is displayed on the bottom-right corner of the screen. (Depending on the computer keyboard, the mark should be displayed above the number key) The mark and corresponding number of trials is as follows.

When patterns are displayed, say the following.
"Patterns will appear so please remember which boxes they are in."
Confirm that the subject is looking at each box in the order they open. Once all boxes have been opened, one pattern will be displayed at a time in the centre of the screen.
Instructions.
Please touch the box which had that pattern.
When the 2 pattern stage has been answered correctly, the next message will appear.
All correct. Next there will be 3 patterns.
3 patterns (This level has one practice)
Press the space bar to continue and say the following.
"Next, there will be three patterns."
As described above, if the subject makes a mistake, say the following.
"It did not say you were correct. The computer will open the box again and show us where the pattern actually was."
4 patterns (This level has one practice)
In the 3 pattern practice if the subject answers all correctly, the computer will display the message 'All correct. Next there will be 4 patterns'.
Press the space bar to continue and say the following.
"Next, there will be 4 patterns."
As described above, if the subject makes a mistake, say the following.
"It did not say you were correct. The computer will open the box again and show us where the pattern actually was."
5 patterns (This level has one practice)
In the 4 pattern practice if the subject answers all correctly, the computer will display the message 'All correct. Next there will be 5 patterns'.
Press the space bar to continue and say the following.
"Next, there will be five patterns."
As described above, if the subject makes a mistake, say the following.
"It did not say you were correct. The computer will open the box again and show us where the pattern actually was."
6 patterns (This level has one practice)
When there are 6 patterns, even a subject who is performing very well will begin to make mistakes. All answers must be correct, but inform the subject that they should try to get all answers correct after practicing a few times.
Please say the following.
"This time, all 6 boxes have a pattern inside them so please remember which pattern is in which box. It is unlikely you will get all of them correct on the first go, but you can keep trying until you do. Please try your best."
Press the space bar.
As described above, if the subject makes a mistake, say the following.
"It did not say you were correct. The computer will open the box again and show us where the pattern actually was."
When the practice is completed with all correct answers, the computer will display 'All correct'.
The next test displayed is SWM.
Spatial Working Memory (SWM)
The CANTABelect system confirms set-up items, as in the photo, and the subject performs this task using only the index finger of their more dominant hand. The subject must not switch hands during the test.
When the test begins 3 red boxes will be displayed on the screen and the black section on the right side is called the 'goal'. The coloured squares are called 'boxes' to convey the concept that a blue token can be hidden within them. In the first 3 box practice, perform a demonstration, then allow the subject to practice the 2nd and 3rd times.
Practice step - 3 boxes
Display the SWM start screen by pressing k and say the following.
"In this test, a number of coloured boxes will be displayed on the screen. Each time, try to find the box which has a blue token hidden inside. The first time, there is only one hidden token. On the right-hand side of the screen you must collect many blue tokens and put them in the black space ('goal'). To see inside the box, just touch it like this."
Touch the box in the centre of the screen. (Try not to make the subject to think that there is some sort of methodical strategy) Say the following.
"There wasn't a blue token in this box, so let's try and open another one."
Touch another box.
"There was a blue token in this box, so we move it over here and fill up the black space. (Touch the black gap on the right-hand side of the screen)"
The instructions below are very important so make sure to emphasize them thoroughly.
"This time, we found a blue token within this box."
Point to the box which had a blue token inside.
"…there was no token in that one, so we will not return to it. We need to find 2 more tokens, but the computer will never use the same box twice. Therefore, we must touch a different box."
Touch a different box.
"There wasn't a token in this box, so let's try another one."
Touch the box in which a token has yet to be found and reveal the blue token, then touch the right-hand side of the screen.
"Now we have found 2 tokens, so the final token should be here."
Touch only the box in which a token has yet to be found and reveal the blue token, then touch the right-hand side of the screen.
"We have found all 3 tokens and completely filled in the black space with blue tokens. The test is complete."
The computer will display 'Complete', and there will be a short melody. After a short pause there will be a 'New Set' message.
Say the following.
"Now it is your turn to try."
Press k to display three yellow boxes.
When the subject touches a box it could open to reveal a blue token. If necessary, say the following.
"To search for the blue tokens, please touch a box."
The subject must move tokens by touching the 'goal'. Instruct as necessary.
"You found a blue token to fill up the black space"
Instruct as necessary.
"Please look for another token. Don't forget that it will be in a different box."
"Try touching a different box."
The subject touches the remaining boxes in which a token has yet to be found. If a blue token is revealed, say the following.
"That's right. You found the second blue token."
Say the following if necessary.
"Please put the token in the black space. You only need to find one more token."
The subject touches the box in which a token has yet to be found and fills in the black space with the token.
If the subject finds the right box, encourage him/her.
If the subject makes a mistake, say the following.
"Please do not return to a box in which you have already found a blue token. The computer will never hide a token in the same box."
If the subject completes the set, the computer will display 'Complete' and there will be a short melody. After a short pause a 'New Set' message will be displayed.
In Set 3, as necessary, repeat the basic explanations used in practice 2. If the subject clearly understood the instructions in the previous set, it is fine to continue without giving guidance.
If an empty box is opened, say the following.
"Too bad, keep trying."
If the subject completes this set, the computer will display 'Complete' and there will be a short melody. After a short pause a 'New Set' message will be displayed and the test will increase in difficulty.
Assessed stage: Assessed practice 6 levels. The 2nd box out of 4, 2nd box out of 6, 2nd box out of 8.
To start each of the test stages, press k.
Each time inform the subject that if there are 4/6/8* boxes, they must find 4/6/8* tokens.
In each stage, if the subject finds the first blue token, instruct as follows.
*depending on the number of boxes displayed.
"Please find 3/5/7 more boxes (with tokens)."
If the subject seems confused, instruct as follows.
"Please put the tokens in the right-hand side/goal."
"Please look for another token."
After the 2nd level of the 8-box practice the test will be over. The next test displayed is PRM.
Pattern Recognition Memory (PRM)
Please look at the photo below.

Presentation stages (Note: There are no practice stages)
Explain before starting the test. Display the PRM start screen and say the following.
"Now one box will appear. There are a number of patterns, but they will appear one at a time."
Please do not say 'things'. This is so the subject does not get caught up in preconceptions with verbal labels.
"Look carefully and try to remember the patterns. I do not need to explain the details of the patterns and you do not need to remember the order in which they appear. All you need to do is choose between a pattern you have already seen and a new pattern. Are you ready?"
Pressing k the test begins. The patterns are displayed
Point to the screen and say the following.
"Here the first pattern has appeared."
Make sure that the subject is looking at the screen.
If they are not looking, instruct as follows.
"Please do not look away."
When the presentation stage is over and the first 2 box choices appear, say the following.
"There are two patterns. Please touch the pattern you have already seen."
When the subject has answered and the next selection appears, say the following.
"Please touch the pattern you have seen before."
When necessary, instruct for the remaining selections.
"Which one did you see before? Please touch it."
When the test is complete, the next to be displayed is the RTI start screen.
Reaction Time (RTI)
CANTABelect test implementation procedures for the test subject.
Responses are carried out using the press-pad. As directed in the photo, place the press-pad in front of the subject. With the black cord at the top-right, straighten the press-pad and place it near the screen.

The subject responds using only the index finger of their dominant hand. During the test, other fingers are placed near the buttons.
Training stage 1 - Release and point
Display the RTI start screen, pass the press-pad to the subject and explain how to use it. Practice until the subject becomes used to it.
An explanation of the first part of this test.
After pressing the button a yellow circle will appear within the circle. As soon as this happens release the button and touch the circle. Hold down the button until the yellow circle appears. At first, practice this a number of times.
Pressing k the first stage of the test begins.
Please make sure that the subject uses the same hand when operating the press pad and the touch screen.
Hold down the button until you see the yellow circle.
If the subject touches the circle too early, please instruct as follows
"Hold down the button until you see the yellow circle."
If the subject touches the circle too late, please instruct as follows
"Please touch the circle a little quicker."
If the subject does not hold down the button for the next practice session, please say the following.
"Please hold down the button."
When the subject touches the circle correctly, the computer displays 'That's right'.
After 10 circles have appeared the computer will pause for a moment and display 'Please wait'. Then the test will increase in level of difficulty.
Stage 2 - Release and point (Next level)
Explanation of this part.
After you have pressed the button a yellow circle will again appear. As before, once this occurs please touch the circle
Pressing K, stage 2 begins.
If the subject touches the circle too early, please instruct as follows.
"Please hold down the button until you see the yellow circle."
If the subject touches the circle too late, instruct as follows
"Please touch the circle a little quicker."
If the subject does not hold down the button for the next practice session, please say the following.
"Please hold down the button."
At the end of this stage, the computer will display 'Please wait'.
Stage 3 - Release and point, 5 choices (Practice stage)
Say the following.
"Now, you will need to make the selection out of 5 choices. After you press the button, a smaller circle will appear in one of 5 circles. Release the button, and touch the circle where this happens. To begin with we will again practice."
Pressing k, stage 3 begins.
If it seems the subject does not understand, instruct as follows.
"A smaller circle will appear in one of the 5 circles. When this occurs, touch that circle as quickly as you can."
Instruct as follows.
"Please hold down the button."
"Please do not let go until you see the smaller circle appear."
After 10 circles have appeared the computer will pause for a moment and display 'Please wait'. Then the test will increase in level of difficulty.
Stage 4 - Release and point, 5 choices (Next level)
Say as follows.
"That's right. Now 5 circles will appear. When you see a smaller circle appear within one of them, touch that circle. But please do not let go of the button until you see the smaller circle."
Pressing k, stage 4 begins.
Instruct as follows.
"Please hold down the button."
"Please do not let go until you see the smaller circle appear."
"Please use the same hand to press the button and to touch the screen."
The test is now complete.
Japanese to English: Technical translation (batteries)
Translation - English Investigating the possibility of using secondary batteries in hearing aids which currently use zinc-air batteries. Collecting information from all hearing aid markets and introducing/proposing batteries of this company.
[Summary of proceedings]
With regard to the hearing aid market
Until up to 2-3 years ago, custom made items were the mainstream, but with the arrival of hearing aids which could be attached to the ear, for those with minor hearing impairments, the demand for such items has increased.
In the past, types 44 and 48 were the mainstream, but with the 41 and 536 types, small-size hearing aids which could be attached to the ear made an entrance into the market.
Contrary to initial expectations, it is anticipated that demands will continue to increase.
The proportion of elderly citizens who use hearing aids is overwhelmingly high.
Those in their 70s purchase hearing aids the most.
The number of people who buy air-batteries over the internet is increasing.
Air-batteries have both pros and cons.
They are strongly influenced by the external environment.
The deterioration of the battery is severe due to the intake of carbon dioxide from the air.
The life span varies in summer and winter.
Leakages are common when abroad.
There is the possibility of battery swelling.
As the electrolyte has a water supply, when the humidity is high the volume of the electrolyte increases due to oxidation of the zinc.
There are many cases of this affecting the hearing aid.
Attention is being paid to this fact at the HP of the battery manufacturer’s association.
Hearing aids attached to the ear make up about half of all hearing aid models.
Before they were all 44, 48 types.
There are more 48 types.
There are not many types directly for the ear hole (ready-made).
Ear-hole types are mostly custom made.
There are no particular regulations with regard to the battery (including medicinal).
With regard to using secondary batteries for hearing aids.
All manufacturers had an interest in a chargeable hearing aid, but there was no secondary battery that could be used.
With the development by Varta of a battery which met the requirements (with Ni-MH), a chargeable model made an entrance into the market.
Each company is developing a secondary battery model.
Current environmental issues.
Concern regarding disposal of batteries.
Europe has greater concern than the USA.
It is anticipated that the demand for secondary batteries will increase.
There are economic merits for customers.
Conversely, due to the fact that the secondary battery does not have a high cost, there are issues regarding sales from the manufacturing/sales perspective.
Safety is a point of concern for the secondary battery.
Accidents while charging.
A weak point is that the capacity is small.
The usage time of a hearing aid is long.
When the charge runs out, it will be a problem of the re-charging time is long.
=It would be better to immediately exchange for a new battery.
Chargeable models currently on sale are the types interchangeable with air-batteries.
However charging time is long (5-8 hours).
If importance is attached to safety, charging slowly would be better.
There is a type of hearing aid where the actual model can be charged and there is a type where only the battery can be charged.
For elderly citizens, the type where the actual model is charged is better.
As they are chargeable types, it is not a concern how well they are selling.
For the secondary battery-type models already on sale, fundamentally, the charger is developed by the hearing aid manufacturer.
With regard to the possibility of Rion models adopting batteries from this company.
If a completely acceptable product can be proposed, the use of secondary batteries would be welcomed.
It is known that inquiries are being made to stores.
Such inquiries are from parents of students from schools for the hearing impaired, etc.
If targets are focused on, the use of secondary batteries will be possible.
44, 48 types would be used for those with a high level of hearing impairment.
They consume a lot of electricity.
Attention must be paid to limiting battery expenses.
Users with hereditary hearing impairments (not elderly citizens) can easily exchange batteries.

With the battery unit charger type, battery exchange time increases.
The hearing aid is 1.3V so a 3V type cannot be used.
Interchangeability with the air battery would not be possible unless the voltages matched.
The ordinary operating variable is 1.1V.
Some are set at 0.9, 1.0V.
(The possibility of decreasing the voltage of the lithium battery by changing active layer proportions will be explained)
