It is rather unlikely for me to make less in 2011 than in 2010, having been unable to work for 3/4 of the year. I haven't set an income target that could be measured in Euros or Dollars or any other currency, for that matter, for 2011. The main goal to achieve is to be making Enough in 2011. My wise accountant says we should set it at a realistic level, but never too high, because if the tax authorities have to pay anything back, they do so after ensuring that they really have to, and without interest. This year a major client went bankrupt, and they have at least accepted that, but they owe me money... If I earn more than predicted for tax purposes, then the money lies cosily in my account until December, by which time I should be aware what I owe in tax. And they do not charge interest unless I delay payment several months into the New Year... I'm already booked for the first week of January and have an ASAP job this week too! I wish everyone good health and lots of good clients with interesting jobs according to your taste ▲ Collapse | | | Rolf Kern Švýcarsko Local time: 19:39 angličtina -> němčina + ... In memoriam
How could I make an income target? It's up to my clients, in what extent they require my services or go to cheap price countries.

It's called a budget. As a freelance translator I run a business. It's not possible to run a business without a budget. Having an income target, and by that I mean a target that ensures that I can pay my bills, eat a warm dinner every day, build my pension fund and go on holiday, takes the uncertainty out of everyday life. (Bonus: If I don't have to worry about money to pay my bills, I'm probably a much better translator because I can consentrate on my work.) So what if my regular c... See more It's called a budget. There are so many potensial custumers out there. Just find them. And yes, my budget for 2011 is bigger than it was for 2010. ▲ Collapse | | | Rebecca Garber Local time: 13:39 Člen (2005) němčina -> angličtina + ...
If "more than I made in 2010" is an acceptable target, then yes. If I'm supposed to have something more specific than that, then no. | | | Claire Cox Velká Británie Local time: 18:39 francouzština -> angličtina + ... Subject to the vagaries of exchange rates | Dec 29, 2010 |
As a UK-based translator, much of my income is subject to the vagaries of the exchange rate. Last year I was considerably down on the previous year because exchange rates had worsened, but also because I was ill for a month - you can never truly rule out such eventualities, no matter how invincible you may think you are! In saying that, I usually have a set number of words I like to do a month and I start to worry and take action if I realise I'm not achieving that. By using TMs and specialising... By using TMs and specialising, plus using voice recognition software, I've managed to increase my productivity most years and my target is, I suppose, to improve at least slightly on the previous year. The recession over the past two years has made it difficult to increase rates to existing clients, but I'm hoping to remedy that this year - time will tell. All the best to everyone for 2011!

I have deliberately set ambitious targets for translation income next year. This is motivated mainly by the desire to improve the tools I have at my disposal - and consequently, to improve the service I am able to provide. It is natural to think that this will result in a more comfortable working environment, and increased earning power. It is also motivated by the desire to enjoy my "free time" to the full.
