I have been seeing ad postings requiring TRADOS and other tools. Can anyone explain what these tools do? I am considering buying something but not sure it will help me.

Check past forum posts Aug 22, 2013

Hi Don,

There are literally gazillions of forum posts on CAT tools (including TRADOS), discussions on the merits of each CAT tool, discussions on whether these are necessary, discussions on what translators think of CAT tools etc. etc. etc. on this forum.

You may find that if you do a search on past forum posts you can obtain all the information you need.
Happy searching!

In other words, don't rush into starting using one just because you think that it will get you more work or because some random entity said so. First you must understand what they are about, their advantages, shortcomings and limitations in general and specifically for your circumstances.

A good place to start is with OmegaT: a free, open source and robust Translation Environment. With it you can learn the basic concept that generally applies to all the other tools as well, see if it makes sense for you to use one of these tools, and maybe even find that it meets all your needs. The fact that it is free doesn't mean that it is any less better than the commercial tools available - there isn't one absolute perfect translation enviroment, it all depends on your needs and personal preference (i.e. what is most comfortable for you).

Software comparison tool Aug 23, 2013

Hi Don,

You can use the software comparison tool: http://www.proz.com/software-comparison-tool

I used it and you can have a general idea about Cat tools.

Best regards,
Raúl
