English term

home as pit

English to French Art/Literary Linguistics
"Home stocktake:
home as sanctuary, home as mortgage millstone, °°home as pit°°."

in a "life audit" book, where you make an inventory of all aspects of your life, mainly to find more time to dedicate to realising your dreams.

I translated it by '(le domicile en tant que) °°trou sans fin°°", because pit could mean a lot of things and I just couldn't find anything that sounded any better.
Whadda ya'll think?
is this good enough? any better ideas?
thanks for helping me again... :-))))

mactrad comme un dortoir?
Non-ProZ.com Jul 15, 2005:
Jane yes, I see what you mean. Trap was another possibility I had considered.
Non-ProZ.com Jul 15, 2005:
yes, definitely negative, but I'm not sure about pitfall.
Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) Jul 15, 2005:
yes, don't you think it might as a pitfall? Negative yes?
Non-ProZ.com Jul 15, 2005:
oui, je suis d'accord avec a.
Juan Jacob Jul 15, 2005:
Jane: mon avis, il y a connotation tout fait pjorative.
Non-ProZ.com Jul 15, 2005:
well, I don't know, that's what I need help with. It could be a money pit, a bottomless/endless pit, a solitary pit, a pit where one is/stays holed up... You see what I mean? By the way, it's UK English, if that makes any difference. Your guess is as good as mine, I'll just go with the majority!
Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) Jul 15, 2005:
Do you think Pit necessarily means bottomless pit? Doesn't that have other connotations entirely?

agree Edmond Laporte : I think that Juan may be right: Buying a new home can be a money pit, or it can be the best investment of your life. It all depends on whether you're smart about how you spend your dollars.

the technical term at the racetrack is \"stand\". \"fosse\" doesn\'t sound too good. As for the other idea, the abyss would be too bizarre, for this readership at least :-)

traquenard
