Portuguese term

banana recheada (pastel de banana)

Portuguese to English Other Food & Drink
This is just for the sake of curiosity. The other day, in an e-mail to a foreign friend, I wrote 'banana pastry'. Is there a more adequate term?

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Vidomar (X) (asker) Nov 21, 2005:

Thanks to you all, folks. Gosh, I didnt expect that a "banana recheada" would cause so much dicussion. Well, food is always a delicious subject. By the way, next time you have a banana-filled pastry, dont forget to sprinkle it with sugar mixed with cinnamom powder. Youll be fatter, but happier.
Vidomar (X) (asker) Nov 20, 2005:
Hi, Elizabeth. From what I could understand, you do there the same funny thing we do in Santa Catarina. We say banana recheada as if something were put inside the banana, but in fact a banana (or half of it) goes into a thin folded layer of dough and then fried, in the same fashion we do with shrimp, ground meat, etc. Is that the same thing?

stuffed bananas

I am no expert on this particular dessert, but in my experience it can mean all sorts of things from pasteis to savory dishes if it is made with plantains. In Fortaleza, we called it stuffed bananas, for what that is worth.

disagree Claudio Mazotti : certainly not...

"pastel" filled with banana (fried thin pastry)

I would keep the original name for being a traditonal and national goodie. It would be nice to write some notes on the cultural aspect of eating pastel on the streets all over the country.
Peer comment(s):

agree Paul Dixon : I would keep this original name too. I remember a question posted here: "Comi um pastel". My suggestion (selected by the asker) was "I ate a "pastel"".

tks a lot, Paul - the cultural aspect of it counts a lot in such cases
