Sorry to ask, it's just that I'm reading some critical and very sarcastic articles about "Lost" TV show, and the author calls Boone `Pen Wrangler', and I can't really understand the joke. The context is (the 1st Episode 1st Season): "Night on the beach. Time to meet the castaways! Charlie is writing "FATE" on his fingers, and some girl is painting her toenails. I'm glad everyone is making an effort to keep their digits looking good. I have to watch this show, after all, and there's nothing worse than watching a show filled with people with boring, unadorned fingers and toes. Toenails's companion, the Pen Wrangler, comes over and offers her some chocolate, which she rejects out of hand. Many folks on the boards have talked about how this scene proves she's a bitch. And I'm not disagreeing that she's a bitch, but I also like to imagine that she rejects the chocolate because she's actually deathly afraid of chocolate and cannot get near it, even if there's no other way to stay alive. She's not a chocoholic; she's a chocophobe. Pen Wrangler tells her that they may be stuck on the island for a while; she tells him that help is on its way, and that she'll eat on the rescue boat".
Anyone to explain the meaning of `Pen Wrangler'? Thank you in advance... mates :)

Hi Kirill - I haven't been watching the series, so I can't say for sure how the fellow ended up with this nickname. My guess is he's a cowboy who ropes horses or cattle in a roping pen. Maybe a rodeo cowboy.
In North America, a wrangler is someone employed to handle animals professionally, especially horses, but also other types of animals.
Wranglers also handle the horses and other animals during the making of motion pictures.
A dude-wrangler is a cowboy or guide that takes people (Dudes) on western-riding horseback trips.

Note from asker:
Thank you, Kim. My apologies, it was a question by mistake. The context which I provided is misleading, in fact the guy just wanted to help and ran for pens to pierce the throat of a almost dying woman. That's why Pen Wrangler. Sounds sarcastic, but the TV show is a bit like this. Thank you :) |

I've never seen the show, so this is little more than a guess! I guess that it's in the meaning of "wrangler" at Cambridge - someone with first class honours in Maths finals.
I would also guess that it's someone argumentative with his pen. It doesn't sound entirely flattering!
I look forward to other suggestions ...

Oh well - I was completely wrong! I'll leave my answer here as an object lesson to others!

Thank you, David. You may want to see the show, it's really great. :) Sorry for the confusion, it's my fault. |
