wagons carrying people and cargo

That's the only thing that occurs to me offhand - ямщики may have been carrying people and обоз might refer to wagons carrying goods, personal effects, munitions.. whatever.. or maybe they were not wagons but carts and carriages, who knows :)

neutral Alexander Demyanov : I am not sure "wagons" are right for passenger traffic in this context. I believe "ямщики" drove "coaches". How are the Minneapolis ppl?
