I admit that it is not my field, but when you buy a house in the States you keep on paying the mortgage and what you pay (minus the interest) is the equity. When you sell the house, or borrow money, you only get the equity since the bank owns the property until it is all paid for. If you have done any work on the house, it is considered also as equity. So in the text, he got the money which he paid for engineering work done in the house since it was counted as equity. As Abdulrahman said, it is a loan that can go for life.

This could be for any of the possible ways to use the money.

: Your description of equity is excellent. Technically, the bank does not own the property but holds a lien on the title until you pay back the balance you owe. Also رهن limits "release" to one method./Please see above, and thanks for pointing out the typo.

You are right Alaa, that is how I understand it too; but I read today many articles online about equity release and all seemed to explain it this way. Again, this is not my specialty, and I am open to learn more about it. Thanks for your input.
