"Difficult to say where: at the back of the head, in the region of the heart, in the *pit of the belly*?
Il protagonista sente un dolore che nn riesce a localizzare. Mi stavo chiedendo se "pit of the belly" può corrispondere a "pit of the stomach", che mi sembrerebbe più probabile di un riferimento all'ombelico.

...ha a che vedere con tre ordini di dolore: quello che ha a che vedere con la testa (col pensiero), col cuore (col sentimento) o con la pancia (l'irrazionalità). E' questo che non riesce a capire: se il suo dolore inespresso, difficile a identificarsi e descriversi, deriva da/ha seda ne la sfera razionale, sentimentale o emotiva. Magari prendo solo una sonora cantonata!

Pit in the sense of the depths. It's the feeling you get in the "pit of your belly/stomach", which can be a kind of aching feeling in the case of emotional pain, or even butterflies or whatnot in the case of love and/or fear. For the Italian equivalent, I see some bloggers use "profondità dello stomaco" even if the English sounds better to me.
At any rate, pit is definitely talking about the deepest place, so that would be "profondità".
