Given that the def. of amortize is "to pay off (as a mortgage) gradually usually by periodic payments of principal and interest," in this context, it seems that amortization isn't an accurate translation, and it ought to be "principal". But I only see one instance in the KudoZ glossary of it being translated that way.

Sometimes the word "paydown" is used to refer to paying principal and/or interest. This is a less technical-sounding word that's recognizable to more English speakers - but it's still used a lot in official documents about banking and finance.
