I am pretty sure this corresponds to the french merchant marine term : une marie salope, but due to the specificity of the word, I would like to make sure it would be in no way offensive. I also have found the 'porteur à déblais", we are dealing with a dredging barge that splits its hull to open and collect med and sediments to ba taken away at sea while dredging a channel. I must adlit that I quite like the "marie salope', and if it IS the right translation, wouldn't want to change it.

Un "bateau-éboueur" c'est comme ça qu'on les appelle dans nos ports bretons. La "marie-salope" fait appel au dragage (drague à godets); le "bateau-éboueur, ou chaland, ou barge éboueur, se suffit à lui-même.
