Watchmaking
Are there any watchmakers out there?
My text is about an epilame, which
"reste fonctionelle après deux lavages horlogers".
It's pretty clear what is meant but I don't know the correct English, since Googling terms like "watchmaking washes" and variations on this haven't helped.

watch cleaning
It seems that all English language websites for epilame, watchmaking and watch care, and references to related books and supplies (e.g. ultrasonic cleaning equipment), all refer to "cleaning", rather than "washing".
You may consider using the verb "lasts" or "remains effective".
You may consider using the verb "lasts" or "remains effective".
Example sentence:
...it lasts for up to two cleanings.
...it remains effective for up to two cleanings.

Comment: "Thanks to everyone who answered. I wish I could award points to more than one person! Looking at all the references, 'cleaning' and 'washing' are both used in watchmaking."

cleaning
I'm guessing that English uses the word cleaning or possibly ultrasonic cleaning, but I have no knowledge of this field.
Epilame: After parts of a watch have been submitted to ULTRASONIC CLEANING they are so chemically clean that oil may spread, so they are given a coating of a patent 'epilame' (stearic acid) to prevent this, a treatment devised by Dr Woog of Paris and Paul DITISHEIM before ultrasonic methods were invented.

: my local watchmaker calls this ' cleaning' - he has an ultrasound machine to do this.

Cleansing watches
to cleanse dirt and sticky oil from watches, they must be taken apart and the pieces put in benzine or petrol, both of which are solvents of grease of all kinds. They are then brushed clean with a watch brush charged with a little dry chalk.

rinsing baths or washing system or equipment for the watchmaking process
The first of the links I am providing gives many possibilities, as does the last, which talks about the 'cleaning processes' in the making of watches. I know nothing about watches except that I like beautiful ones, so I am doing a 'medium' confidence level on this one.

Why would you want to omit the horlogers? As you say, patents must be as strictly translated as possible... You could just say 'washes for use in watchmaking' if that is appropriate. Or washes used in watchmaking...

Note from asker:
In my context, then, 'washes' appears to be appropriate, so would you simply omit 'horlogers'? I don't know if it makes any difference, but the document is a patent so the translation needs to be as close as possible to the original. Thanks |
