Spanish term

serie limitada

Spanish to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Artists
"Por este motivo, aunque sus obras fueron muy reconocidas y difundidas gracias al apoyo institucional, se editaron series limitadas."

Está hablando en concreto de obras arquitectónicas.

Os agradecería vuestra ayuda, y también si me podéis ayudar con el significado de "editar una obra arquitectónica", pues no sé muy bien a qué se refiere.

Gracias a todos y saludos.

Bubo Coroman (X) Jul 2, 2009:
try looking up the architect in Wikipedia... or if he's not in there, on Google. This will give a clue too (I'm not asking for his name as this is a public site)
Michael Powers (PhD) Jul 2, 2009:
limited series were issued This usually would sound more natural.
Natalia Pedrosa (X) (asker) Jul 2, 2009:
Hi How about "only limited series were produced?" Does it sound natural?
neilmac Jul 2, 2009:
Ask the authors .. what they mean. "Editar" is to publish or edit, which usually refers to a text/document/book/magazine/journal etc. It is possible that they mean: " ... only limted series were carried out/built/created" but it does sound rather odd, perhaps due to a foible of the author. I'd ask if possible, they are usually glad to give/receive feedback (this may be difficult if the text is from an agency).

the works were published in limited print runs

a "print run" is the number of copies of a work which a printer prints at one time. A print run can be small (say 100 copies) or large (say thousands of copies). Printing is driven by demand for the works. Here it is referring to "small print runs".

it would be helpful if you could also post the previous sentence, which gives the reason for the "series limitadas", in order to pinpoint exactly what it refers to.

the text might be referring to "limited editions", http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited_edition#Limited_edition but the further context should give a clue.

an extract from the Wikipedia entry above: A limited edition is restricted in the number of copies produced, although in fact the number may be very high.

hi Natalia, can you post the previous sentence? Where it says "sus obras fueron ... difundidas" it seems to refer to publishing too. But the previous sentence might solve the mystery.
Note from asker:
Hi Deborah, as stated in the question, it's all about architectural works, if it's any help, it's not about book editions. ;)
This generation created a work mostly exclusively devoted to the edition of luxury products. I was wrong, it was not about architecture. Sorry.

limited series

How about ending the sentence like this:
",..., although only limited series saw the light of day."

" only limited series [0f the luxury objects in question] were produced" ...
etc.
Note from asker:
I like your proposal, "saw the light of day" is perfect and no producing, generating, creating or making verb are implied. Thanks a lot!

limited editions were published

It would be more usual to say "editions" than "series" in UK publishing terminology. I also like "saw the light of day" but think that "were published" is closer to the source term and is both natural and correct.

agree Silvia Killian Özler : That is exactly what I would say.

Limited editions...

Hi Natalia,
As you may imagine there are many ways that Architects works may be edited and published. One is that the original drawings which were the "seed" for the the final program, may be published in limited series and offeref through galleries, publishing houses, etc. here's an example:

Rem Koolhaas
Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2006
Screenprint on 310gsm somerset paper
14.7 x 17.3 cm
Edition of 200, signed and numbered
£120 including VAT
SOLD OUT
Rem Koolhaas (born in Rotterdam, 1944) is one of the most influential architects of his generation. He was awarded the RIBA Gold Medal in 2004 and the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2000.
This limited-edition print is a reproduction of one of the first drawings Koolhaas made in the process of designing the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2006 with Cecil Balmond, with Arup. It reveals the key characteristics of the building – the inflatable roof atop a walled enclosure – at its earliest stage.
Koolhaas is world renowned for both his buildings and his contribution to current critical thinking on the built environment. His most celebrated buildings include the Prada Epicenter, Los Angeles, 2004; the Seattle Central Library, 2004; and the Casa da Musica, Porto, 2005. He lives and works in Rotterdam.

I essentially agree with Mike's suggestion, although I would suggest that the series was "published".
Another possibility is that the theory proposed by the architect may be published, sometimes before he has executed any physical works, such as the case of Daniel Liebskind (creator of the Jewish Museum in Berlin), The New York Five ( May 2009 ... The New York Five refers to a group of five New York City architects (Peter Eisenman, Michael Graves, Charles Gwathmey, John Hejduk and ...

Saludos :))
