Discussion

MMUlr Jul 22, 2009:
Physik vs. Physikum Hi Johanna, right (see also my comment to Susan): This is a "mandatory course to be completed" *before* the Physikum; if you call it "Physikum-Praktikum" (an unfamiliar term to me!), it means that you need it for the Physikum = Vorprüfung after 4 terms of medical studies which terminates the vorklinische Studium.

Beside physics you need such a (combined theoretical and practical course) in chemistry, biology, biochemistry ...

So IMO this is not an alternative expression for Physikum-Praktikum, but is the course of *physics* / Physik - with 'k' - (for medical students im Vorklinikum or Vorphysikum).
Johanna Timm, PhD Jul 22, 2009:
Physikum? Maybe this refers to the "Physikum-Praktikum", a mandatory module to be completed by German med students in their first pre-clinical semester?

Susan Welsh Jul 22, 2009:
to Heart If you are an expert in the subject, I defer to you--I'm going by dictionaries. But all those I consulted give various meanings -- internship, practical training, work experience, practical course, traineeship, etc. It seemed odd to me for physicians to be doing an internship in physics--they already have a career, how can they take time off to go work as an intern for zero or low wages? That's why I figured it had to be a course. Googling for "internship," "physics," and "physicians" gives mostly results for physics students who are interested in going in to the field of "medical physics" -- which is quite different than a physician interning in physics. So, I'm not sure.

physics for medical practitioners

I think the "Praktikum" (practical course) just means that it's aimed at people who are not studying to be physicists, but need to know certain aspects of the science for their own work.

When I went to college, it was called "physics for poets." But then I didn't go to medical school.

neutral MMUlr : Yes, this is a (practical) course in physics which must be passed during the first 4 terms of medical studies in Germany (so-called "Vorphysikum" - or "vorklinische Semester").//Just saw lirka's comment - yes, true: NOT practitioners, but students!

Thanks, that is useful, as are above discussion entries.

disagree Lirka : I went to med school and this is a course for 1st year medical students ( in EU, not USA); in the USA, it is part of college pre-med studies (won't find such as course in med school curriculum in the USA). But- definitely NOT for a course for "physicians"

Sounds good to me.

internship in physics for physicians

Praktikum = internship in American English
Peer comment(s):

neutral Lancashireman : 'doctor' = 'physician' (in American English)

disagree Sabine Akabayov, PhD : this is definitely a course not an internship (praktikum just means it's a lab course), I taught one of these courses myself

disagree Lirka : absolutely not, sorry; with sibsab; I was enrolled in such a course as a med STUDENT :)

physics lab for medical students

I was enrolled in such a course, so I am sure :)
Peer comment(s):

neutral Susan Welsh : This sounds good to me, and coheres with the refrence MMUlr provides, below. But I'll stay neutral, since I'm not positive, one way or another.

Fair enough, but I am sure.
