I am not sure about "layout" with regards to Auslegung and never heard of a light-metal crane that's why I opt to use lightweight. Any other suggestions?

Since this is a "Diplomarbeit" maybe that is why we have not heard of this - yet? Do you have any more context there, especially how big this crane is and what it does? The alloy cranes I have found are all smaller units.
But I would translate it literally, with the term above or maybe even light metal.

@ Gudrun: Leider habe ich nicht mehr Kontext - denke aber, angesichts der einzelnen Prüfungsfächer (Konstruktionslehre etc.) dass hier eindeutig die Konstruktion/das Design/Layout gemeint ist. Aber Danke den Gedanken :-)
