aus einem Uni-Abschlusszeugnis bzgl. Studium Sozialökonomie

Frage an ggf. Bachelor-Studenten: Verstehe ich das hier richtig, dass es zwischen "großer Hausarbeit" und "Abschlussarbeit" noch einen Unterschied gibt - wenn ja, welchen?

Könnte die große Hausarbeit dann mit "extended coursework" oder besser "large coursework" übersetzt werden? Ist dies verständlich?

In the US at some universities (usually top 20 and Ivy league) students getting a BA write a thesis at the end of their last year. The term dissertation is only used for students getting a graduate degree (MA or PHD) It's interesting to find out that in the UK they use the term dissertation so freely!

Oxford and Cambridge Well, the system at Oxbridge is somehow different than at other universities. Indeed, if a student finishes his B.A. at either of these universities he is automatically entitled to be awarded also an M.A. degree and just needs to pay a certain amount of money (15 GBP, I think) to receive the document. On the other hand, Oxbridge offers a variety of other Master's courses which certainly require a good amount of work.

grade inflation Yes, and at Oxford and Cambridge you can even get an M.A. 7 years after matriculation regardless of whether you have done further studies after the B.A.
On the other hand, in Germany we also have grade inflation. Let me quote something: "Im Jahre 2005 erzielten deutsche Hochschulabsolventen in den Fächern Biologie, Physik, Mathematik, Psychologie, Chemie und Philosophie" Durchschnittsnoten zwischen 1,54 und 1,67". I know why, actually. Nobody who didn't understand say maths would try to study it or stay the course. So let's not worry about how to compare the incomparible.

In the UK everything is a matter of titles - they also call first year pupils in primary school 'students'. And bouncers 'security executives'. So they don't have a problem with calling a BA 'degree' and the last test (in the region of 10000 words) 'dissertation'...

@Dissertation Es gibt einen Unterschied zwischen einer deutschen "Dissertation" und einer englischen "dissertation". In der Tat wird an englischen Universitäten sowohl die Bachelor- als auch die Master-Abschlussarbeit als "dissertation" bezeichnet. In Deutschland bezeichnet der Begriff "Dissertation" ausschließlich eine Arbeit zur Erreichung des Doktorgrades.

Dissertation (in BE) "Dissertation" hat eine Bedeutungswandel nach unten erfahren- ich weiß, dass die Abschlussarbeit eines 3-jährigen B.A.-Studiums in Großbritannien (ca. 20 Seiten lang - also für meine Begriffe höchstens eine Facharbeit oder extended essay) auch schon Dissertation heißen kann , obwohl B.A. noch lange keinem Diplom oder gar Magister/Promotion entspricht.

By the way: Coursework bezeichnet im englischsprachigen Raum die während des Kurses erbrachte (mündliche) Leistung, passt in diesem Fall also nicht.

Wahrscheinlich eher 'thesis', 'assignment' oder sogar 'long essay' (so hiess das bei mir). Ich denke mir, dass es eher eine eigenstaendige Arbeit ist, und nicht 'coursework'.

Long term paper

ist einer der gängigen Begriffe für Hausarbeiten, die im Laufe des Studiums geschrieben werden und sich somit von der Abschluss- oder Bachelorarbeit unterscheiden.

term paper

I wouldn't use extended coursework, as it sounds like they are talking about writing a term paper for the course, or maybe a "thesis". Thesis is the term used in the US for a large paper (usually between 10K-20K words) on a subject which students have to write in order to get their degree (in addtion to writing essays or term papers for individual courses). A thesis gets its own grade or "marks". This thesis is not to be confused with "a term paper" for a particular course. A term paper is the largest essay that a student has to write for a particular class, usually at the end of a semester and at ivy leagues is about 7K-10K words.
