The French data-protection law of 6 January 1978
How formal/legal is this text? The reason I ask is that the French love their dates, whereas, generally, we brits rarely if ever refer to them at all. If this doesn't need to cite that law specifically (as in a legal clause, perhaps), then you might be able to get away with omitting the date

The law concerned is "79-17 of 6 January 1978", regarding personal data and computer files... It was the beginning of French legislation on data protection

French Data Protection Act of 6 January 1978
In English we say Data Protection Act, not Law. (You can follow it with the original French term in italics and/or brackets)

: My use of "law" (lower case) was being non specific. I cd just as easily have posted "legislation"

well, it does refer to a specific Law - the one passed on 6 Jan 1978, no. 79-17. "Act" is terribly British, though...
