Italian term

proprietà tonificanti

Italian to English Other Food & Drink
Same term as an earlier question but in a different context.

Gli spinaci a causa dell’acido ossalico da cui sono composti possono favorire i
calcoli renali e ridurre le riserve di vitamina C. Quindi è importante consumarli
sempre insieme ad alcune gocce di limone. Possiedono vitamina A, acido
folico (che favorisce la produzione di globuli rossi), e una discreta quantità di
minerali anche se l’idea che siano molto ricchi di ferro in realtà non è molto
aderente alla realtà. Hanno proprietà lassative, cardiotoniche e tonificanti.

Thank you!

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (2): Tom in London, Elena Zanetti

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : The asker has to work out how to avoid repeating "tonic", since it also says "cardiotoniche", but that's not a problem.

Italian term (edited): Hanno proprietà lassative, cardiotoniche e tonificanti.

Acts as a laxative, is good for the heart and increases vitality

To try an hook up three adjectives in English with "properties" that both sound natural and are faithful to the meaning is a little optimistic. Need to get away from the literal.
Peer comment(s):

agree Adar Brauner : I like Jim's translating way: simple, quick, pragmatic! Good holiday, how's the water in the seichelles?
1 day 52 mins
neutral Fiona Grace Peterson : I think the register is inappropriate... what's wrong with using "properties" for all three?
1 day 2 hrs
You are right, the register is pretty medical . I often ask my doctor to stop (being an idiot - because the native speakers of the language are all long dead - and stop) speaking ancient Greek. Answer: because it is not the simple plain English I love.
