English term

turn my head

Non-PRO English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Thriller Fiction
Two basketball coaches talked about the match that the first one won.
"Nice to meet you sir. Saw your guys play Clippers in the spring?"
"Oh yeah! I remember that game. After a while, I just had to turn my head. Did Clippers ever bother showing up?"

--No answer from the other as the scene shifts to the thought of the protagonist who thinks it's strange that he still remember the game.

So what does "turn my head" in this context mean? Why did Clippers "bother showing up"? Of course, they showed up..they played against this team.
What do I miss? Thank you in advance for kind help of genius translators here.

Change log

Dec 21, 2015 19:24: Yvonne Gallagher changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): Tony M, Graham Allen-Rawlings, Yvonne Gallagher

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Lingua 5B Dec 21, 2015:
Yes, Tony makes sense what you say, just seen it now.
Tony M Dec 21, 2015:
@ Lingua I don't think meaning that would apply here, as the speaker specifically says "I just had to turn my head." The other sense you quote is always more of a passive construction: 'my head was turned' or 'it turned my head', and couldn't be used in the first-person way it is here.
Lingua 5B Dec 21, 2015:
Not sure if this makes sense in the context but... I have found this meaning:

http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/turn head

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/turn-one-s-head

Could he become conceited in a way, is it supported by the context/story-line?

as in "it went to his head"?

look away

It sounds as if 'Clippers' beat his team rather severely — so he had to turn his head in order to look away and not see the disaster.

I assume the remark about "did they turn up?" is intended to indicate that he wants to forget all about the match, to which they not only turned up, but beat his own team soundly.
Note from asker:
Wowww Thank you very much. It makes more sense here. You are brilliant

agree Charles Davis : I've changed my mind; I think it's as you say and the Clippers gave his team a hiding. "Did they ever bother showing up!" (which isn't a question) would mean they really did bother showing up, they really made their presence felt.
