The sentence I have to translate doesn't give any context that could help me understand the meaning of this expression. I've never heard of the expression and can't seem to find it anywhere.

Has anyone ever used/heard of this?

L'expression take a chainsaw to something signifie détruire totalement, réduire qchose en miettes, etc. Votre auteur(e) s'est p.-ê. emmêlé(e) les pinceaux ou l'a fait exprès en fonction du texte. Difficile à dire sans plus d'infos.
