Discussion

Taña Dalglish May 12, 2020:
@ Lucía It is a challenge for us too! Perhaps then we can approach it in another way? Can you then post a few definitions before "Servicio Caliente" and a few after, and let us see if there is any correlation or order that may help us all to get the term you seek correct. How about that approach?
Lucia Guarin (asker) May 12, 2020:
No more context The texts is a list of definitions taken from a manual, I do not have the full text nor more references of use, that's way I cannot give more context and this term is challenging for me.
Taña Dalglish May 12, 2020:
@ Phil Could be (wrong)? May be wrong? A lot of what ifs? Phil, please ... we need additional context, and by that I mean surrounding text, and I think you are very aware of what I asked, as have others. Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! Stay safe.
philgoddard May 12, 2020:
We do have the context where the term appears - it's the second sentence of Lucia's question. But I think we could do with more surrounding text - I could be wrong, but I'm not wholly convinced that "servicio" means "operation".
Taña Dalglish May 12, 2020:
@ Lucía Agree with Lydia. I understand you are new to the forum. A warm welcome! However, it is a good thing, prior to starting, to read these guidelines and familiarise yourself with them. They are not put out simply to be ignored and there is good reason why they have been issued to begin with:

Lydia De Jorge May 12, 2020:
@Asker Rather than a short explanation, you need to provide the context where the term appears.

Hot Water Operation

It depends on the context.

In this context, servicio refers to the operational function of something. When it comes to boilers or pressurized containers, the function of such items is to heat water. "Heated water" refers to water that is above room temperature.

Here is some detailed information about boilers and their heating functions:
https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/boilers/buying-guide/ind...
https://inspectapedia.com/heat/Heating-Temp-Pressure-Setting...

I would approach the translation as follows:

The term "Hot Water Operation" applies to operating temperatures above room temperature.

Hot Service

Or "heating service" (servicio de calefacción).
Leaving aside the "fnarr" factor, "hot" is sometimes used as a synonym for "live", in electrical wiring contexts. In the absence of sufficient context to decide on the best term, I'd be strongly tempted simply use the literal translation. It could refer to the boiler system for the provision of hot water or steam as mentioned, or electrical installations, air conditioning/central heating…
Example sentence:

Two hot service wires provide 120 volts of power to the main circuit breaker.

... use a neutral conductor size that is the same size as the ungrounded "hot" service conductors...

Due to a lack of context by Asker, it could also be dealing with fluids too, and therefore, the answer depending on additional context, if provided, could relate to "hot operating fluids" (applies to operating temperatures above room temperature).

It appears in a boiler and pressure vessel construction

Lucía: We've all asked for additional context, please! You would be advised to give us more context, as you now have two proposals from Michael and myself, but we are operating in a vacuum here. Please note that all questions you ask here on this forum, must contain proper context! We cannot work "in isolation" and then you expect us to give you proper assistance. Thanks so much for "listening" to my spiel; I fully appreciate you are new, but those are the published guidelines of this forum. A please and thank you won't hurt either.

Lucía: So, are you now saying, as I have seen Helen Chavarria's reference and your note to her that the term you seek is "Puesta en servicio caliente/arranque"? I am a tad confused as we have all pleaded for some additional context, i.e. discussion box asking you if you would post a few lines before the required term and a few lines after, so this leaves me a bit confused. Anyway, here is what I just found for you:

I did find this a moment ago and refers to the "Hot start up" (arranque), e.g. of a boiler system: *** denotes portion I wish to highlight to you.

Hi Lucía:

I too truly understand everything you said in light of Helen's contribution! I do also realise that you gave us as much information as you had trying to contextualise the meaning of "servicio caliente" which is what you originally posted! I do understand. [I had suggested perhaps a few phrases before, whether dealing with "servicio caliente" or not may have also helped colleagues to contextualise it too (but perhaps not). I also recognise how difficult it must be for you to keep trying to tell us all there is no more context, but there was nothing ontoward intended in our repeated requests, except our wish to help you. That is all! The only thing I keep asking myself is whether it is just "water" alone or "fluids" as a whole, and why I posted what I posted. Anyway, Lucía, the matter is now closed, and you've made your decision, and I try to abide by the Asker's decisions, as ultimately the work is yours, not ours! Regards.
Note from asker:
Thank you! That was my first option but I wasn't sure.
Taña, thank you for all your references and explanations. I've read and use every single word for making my decision. Regarding the context, I just mentioned the type of text "pressure vessels" as this is the only context I have too. The text I'm translating is a list of definitions taken from a construction manual, other words on the list are contractor, pressure vessel, conductivity, heat transfer, equipment and it doesn't give more clues for contextualizing.

Reference:

I've found this in a downloaded document from Colombia.

Note from asker:
¡Muchas gracias! En este caso no estoy segura de que se refiera específicamente al arranque pero me ayuda mucho ver que el termino "servicio caliente" se use en español.
