French term

espace aéro-maritime

French to English Other Military / Defense geopolitics
This is an overview of strategic naval decisions in a region.

One potential benefit of new technology is control over 'espaces aéro-maritimes'.

Is there a sleek way of combining 'airspace' with the maritime element?

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Yvonne Gallagher

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Thomas Miles (asker) Dec 5, 2020:
Dear all Thanks for your help. This was a rather last-minute question, but you have at least confirmed that there is not an established equivalent that I had missed. My delivered solution was 'maritime areas and airspace', as from my reading of the text the technology provided control below, on and above the water.
Suzie Withers Dec 4, 2020:
Not many search results for "maritime airspace", although a couple of references to it in military documents, so could work. Note that airspace is not hyphenated as far as I know.

Thanks Bokani. My only reservation with 'environment' is its connotations with the natural world (and this is very much a geopolitical context).

sea and air

Not an expert, but, given the context "sea and air", used as a metonymy might be enough?
Note from asker:
Merci Anthony. Il me semble de plus en plus clair qu'il n'existe pas un terme 'consacré' et qu'on jouit d'un peu de liberté pour créer une solution en anglais (même à partir d'éléments assez simples).
On reflection, I do like this answer, and feel it would work if the context did not call for an exact delimitation.
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : I think this is more likely than just the bits of sky that happen to be above the sea.
