When multiple branching (secondary, tertiary) rays are processed taking into account their complex interactions with the voxels according to the parameters of the applied algorithms, the technique is called “path tracing”.

Comme mentionné en discussion. J'ai jeté un œil sur les articles de Wikipédia, qui semblent assez corrects. Il y a pas mal de littérature sur le rendu en graphisme (en anglais ou en français). Je trouve ce topo pas mal fait, parce que plutôt compréhensible :
