Spanish term

agua del canal

Spanish to English Other Other
This is from a document describing equipment for washing delicate rugs.

"channel water" doesn't seem right to me and from the description (untreated water), it suggests that it refers to the mains water supply. What do others think, please?

"Estos dispositivos estarán conectados al equipo de tratamiento de aguas y podrán tener tres fuentes de alimentación de agua: el depósito con el agua tratada, el depósito con la mezcla de lavado (tensoactivo + agua tratada) y el canal (agua no tratada)"

and:

"Resumen de Control de operaciones de lavado
Selección de la fuente de alimentación: agua del depósito de agua tratada, agua del canal o mezcla de agua con el detergente."

Many thanks.

Discussion

Lisa Rosengard Dec 6, 2021:
It's about water from the mains supply or pipe going into a washer, with an apparatus connected to the equipment for treatment of water with detergents - 3 inlets or outlets of water from and to the washer, as water straight from the main supply, hard and treated water from another pipe or inlet, and a mixture of water and detergent.

Thanks, Neil In that case, and with the topic involving "equipment for washing delicate rugs," the target readership may be a diverse lot, making water 'main' (singular) a potentially useful option, if it plays almost equally well on both sides of the pond.
neilmac Dec 4, 2021:
@Marcelo Indeed, in the UK, we do refer to "mains water" or "water from the mains". I've just run a search for the latter, and got over five million hits. I don't think it's a big deal, as "water main" is also used.
Marcelo González Dec 4, 2021:
Interesting bit of variation ... if 'mains' water is commonly used in the UK. In the US, it would typically be 'from the water main' (singular).
Comunican (asker) Dec 3, 2021:
It is mains water I checked with the client and he responded "por supuesto es el agua del suministro de red" ;-)
neilmac Dec 3, 2021:
Agree I think it most likely means (untreated) mains water, but would need confirmation.
AllegroTrans Dec 2, 2021:
Consider that "canal" (SP) has meanings other than "canal". It could for example mean the main supply pipe.

A literal rendering would appear to work rather well in this context, Comunican, even if you have no evidence right now of any canals nearby. It just makes sense, I'd say, in this context of (un)treated water.

I hope this helps!

Cheers from Vietnam :-)

Note from asker:
Thank you, but the company (which restores and repairs delicate rugs and textiles) is based in the middle of a city with no canals or rivers nearby so I don't feel it would be from a canal
@PhilGoddard: I have indeed looked it up on a map!
Peer comment(s):

agree Jennifer Levey : In many places there is no 'mains water supply' as mentioned by Asker. Instead folk get water from open-air watercourses: channels/leats (UK regional)/canals etc.
