Hello,
I am taking a certificate program with the University of Massachusetts Amherst and for my current translation assignment, I need to translate an internet article from a UK vegan magazine about a cosmetic company called Lush releasing products for afro hair from British English to Brazilian Portuguese. The second paragraph of the article says "...the new range has been created especially for curly, coily and textured Black hair." It seems to me as if it is talking about three different types of Black hair: curly, coily, and textured. It made me think of the current classification used for categorizing curly hair, in that case, I would see those three categories as 4A, 4B, and 4C.
How would you translate those three categories to Brazilian Portuguese? I thought of using "cacheado, crespo e 'black power'". However, since I left Brazil before the last developments in the natural hair industry, I was wondering if anyone would have a more updated/accurate translation for the concept above. Also, I would appreciate some extra insight on how Black hair has been named recently (I always used "crespo" but I wonder if the English terminology, such as "Black hair" and "afro hair", has been adopted in the last years.
The source audience would be vegans or people who use afro hair products in the UK or other areas where Lush products are sold. The target audience would be Brazilians who have access to Lush products, most likely living in the UK.

Hi, Michely. I'd go simply with "cabelos cacheados e crespos" (plural, not singular) because "crespos" already covers black powers, so saying it is a bit redundant. People used to say "black power" a lot, and many still do, but "crespo" has become a standard, especially among us who have this type of hair and are taking ownership of it. I speak from personal experience.
PS. "Cabelo black" and "cabelo afro" can and have also been used, but I'd still go with just "crespo" because going beyond sounds repetitive to me.

: I respectfully disagree. Products targeted to this public are mainly marketed as to "cabelos cacheados", not "cabelos encaracolados". I speak from personal experience and it can be checked in Google Trends (for instance).

: Do you mean "pretos" the color? It'd narrow only to hair that's literally black. It doesn't make sense meaning black people either, bc people of different colors can have these types of hair. Also, "texturizado" has a slightly different meaning here.

Entendi, Aline, mas o o texto coloca ambas as palavras "cacheado e crespo", se for nessa linha de raciocínio o crespo também não encaixa no afro hair.

Achei por bem indicar esta fonte, pois parece-me ser muito boa ao apresentar diferentes tipos de cabelos.
About the categories, I think it's something like this:
1 (A, B, C): straight hair (cabelo liso)
2 (A, B, C): wavy hair (cabelo ondulado)
3 (A, B, C): curly hair (cabelo cacheado)
4 (A, B, C): coily hair/Black hair (cabelo crespo – I believe some brands also use "cabelo crespo/cabelo afro")
Like Aline said, in the products I use, the label shows "cacheados e crespos".

"Cacheado" and "crespo" cover smaller, more specific ranges of hair than "curly" and "coily", so that can be tricky. That's why there's the need to use another term in EN.
PS. "Textured hair" doesn't literally translate to "cabelo texturizado", which has a slightly different meaning in PT. It means when the curly/coily hair is fixed in a specific way, that is, styling your hair to have the curls in a specific way (bigger/smaller or tighter/looser curls), usually making all of the hair uniform (because one person can have more than one type of curls in different parts of their head).
