Metal catalysts or metal reagents residues
Not used: not used at all, or used during SM production and
„not likely to be present" (residues consistently removed, i.e.,
residues found below 30% of limits given in the guideline)

I understand the German "können nicht vorhanden sein" as "metal residues may be present or may not be present". However, I agree, the German is a bit ambiguous, but I think that the English wording, as given in my examples above, is reliable.

: This is possible, but can you explain the choice of "können"?// But if it means "may or may not be present", that's not the same as "are unlikely to be present".

Thank you Phil. You are right the spelling should be 'vorhanden sein'. Please see also my last note above.

Anne Schulz
: agree with "not likely to be present" (with CL = 1, for lack of precise context)

German term (edited):
Rückstände können nicht vorhanden sein
no residues may be present
This is a prohibition:
EMEA/CHMP/SWP/4446/2000 states that no residues of metal catalysts or metal reagents may be present.

: I'm not sure. Could "können" be an error, do you think, just as "can" is often misused in English? Shouldn't it be "müssen" or "dürfen"?

Thanks. "dürfen nicht" would definitely work here. "müssen nicht vorhanden sein" = are not necessarily present

: Agree. This sounds like a guideline imposing limits on the residues left over from a process

: Visiting this quite late, all very dubious IMO - must not be, might not be. And "may" is also dubious. ST should be clearer. Grüße übrigens :-).

: It's possible that they are not present, i.e. they might not be present. "Not likely" means sth. else. Just languagewise IMO..
