English term

no divisions are awarded

English Other Education / Pedagogy
I am translating a school certificate from India; the heading says 'pass certificate' and immediately underneath 'no divisions are awarded' - I can't quite work out what it's referring to. the certificate itself is a mark sheet for an individual; there's no mention of any divisions.
It's a school certificate

But your reference doesn't actually support your argument. Both the grammar and my reference ("The CBSE does not award divisions. It is a straight pass or fail") support mine.

Shame nobody from India can be arsed to contribute.
Daryo Jun 27, 2023:
Ahem ... see the reference.
Christopher Schröder Jun 27, 2023:
I respectfully disagree. It means you either pass or fail. They don't award grades like A, B, C. It doesn't mean the student scraped a pass. They could've been brilliant. See for instance https://wenr.wes.org/2012/05/wenr-may-2012-converting-second... https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&c...
Daryo Jun 26, 2023:
How "grades" are usually defined this student DEFINITELY was awarded a "grade" - the lowest one. Just enough to "pass".

If you blanked out "divisions" I would replace it with "honours" or "mention".

I presume that this cert has the marks but no GPA?

scroll down to the grid, which is self-explanatory

"The national board Central Board of Secondary Education uses a percentage system coupled with a positional grade that indicates the student's performance with respect to their peers. The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education board doesn't and gives only the mark obtained. State boards may give either or both marks and grades; if grades are given, most grade students linearly (e.g.: A+ for >90, A for 80–90 for Kerala state)."

neutral Daryo : there is a GPA, just not high enough for anything else than just "pass" // "no ranking" might work, but wouldn't "without honors" be closer?

Asker wants to know what "division" means; we already know it's a pass cert, with a pass mark without being given a grade/ rank (in this case probably 3rd division)
agree Björn Vrooman : Here’s one of those certificates: https://www.iim-india.net/uploads/hs_mark_sheet/1512469190.p... So I half-agree with Ice Scream. They do award grades; but the percentage marks shown on the doc should dispel any notion that the student “barely passed.”

Thank you! Seems strange they only get a pass cert with those marks? Anyway I think we have to go with " division" = "rank" as per the Indian refs I gave above
agree Alison MacG : Agree with division = rank (Also see discussion box for typical rationale)

neutral Daryo : there is a "performance score": "just enough to pass"

thanks
neutral Christopher Schröder : Not how I'd put it but yes that's what it means

yes, this is the most important, thanks
neutral Yvonne Gallagher : This really doesn't explain "division" in any satisfactory way

Divisions

It should be something used in India education system. I cannot prescribe it to be exact but the first link below mentions something along the lines of students awarded divisions based on their scores. If you make a web search specifically into Indian web sites, you will come across it. For that, I recommend you use Google Advanced Search rather than basic search because you can then specify India as the region of search (the second link I give below).

Understanding the Indian grading system

Understanding the Indian Grading System

GPA is the abbreviation for Grade Point Average. This marking system is also followed in many Indian schools, colleges and universities. But the system followed by Indian institutions is quite different from that followed abroad. Firstly one should know what GPA is. We already know GPA stands for grade point average. It is used to calculate the average grades of students over a given period of time, say semester or term. The GPA is calculated by dividing the average grade points achieved by the student by the total credits present in the entire course period.

On the other hand, CGPA is an abbreviation for cumulative grade point average. It denotes the student’s average grade after the entire course. It assesses the student’s performance throughout the academic program, like bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or school’s academic year. It is a parameter to judge the student’s entire year’s performance. Credits are the entire time period spent by the students in class and grade points are the marks attained by the student in each subject.

To calculate the CGPA, one has to divide the total of grade score by total credits. Now, marks might be on basis of CGPA or SGPA. One might be thinking that what the difference between SGPA and CGPA is. SGPA is Semester end Grade Point Average whereas CGPA is Cumulative grade Point Average. SGPA can be converted to CGPA by easy calculation. The conversion formula can be used to convert SGPA to CGPA easily. CGPA could easily be obtained by adding the SGPAs of all semesters and dividing the sum with total number of semesters.

GPA in the Indian education system
GPA calculation in India is very much different from that used in schools and colleges abroad and this can make Indian students quite confused when they try to apply in international schools.

In India, students are mostly marked on basis of percentage, which later is divided into four ranks known as divisions.

The first is distinction which is seventy five percent and above, next is
first division which is sixty percent to seventy five percent, next is
second division which is from fifty percent to sixty percent and the last is
third division which is forty percent to fiftypercent.

Another system which is very prevalent in India is ten point GPA. It is mainly graded by letters, like nine means an A and so on. These can be very easily converted in GPA and CGPA according to international methods of calculation. Similarly CGPA to percentage is also an easy method. For converting letter grades or percentage into GPA grades the process is very easy. The percentage is first converted to the letter grade and then it is compared to the standardized score of international schools. Suppose, A is ninety five percent, then according to international GPA it is a four, if B is eighty five percent then according to international GPA it is three, similarly C is two and D is one.

short version:

a school certificate from India; the heading says 'pass certificate' and immediately underneath 'no divisions are awarded'

means this student just barely passed - no "honors / distinction / mention ..." just bland minimum "pass".

As ATIL KAYHAN said: you have to ask the right question to get the right answer.

We don't seem to using the same methods / same logic.
neutral Yvonne Gallagher : How do you know it's a bare pass? We don't know the mark awarded And why repeat my refs? And then seemingly misunderstood them :-( "division" does not mean honours or distinction!

By elimination? Being awarded a "pass" with a score so low that there is nothing more to say - what else could it be if not "barely above the required minimum"??
