. Is there a technical problem? I've been trying to accept one of the proposed answers as the most helpful for the last two days now. I have not succeeded so far.
Kurt Porter Aug 27, 2004:
I just got off the phone with the special education advisor for American kids in DoD schools in Germany. She confirmed, "delayed speech." She also stated that there are MANY different reasons for this learning disability, and that Autism is only one.

Another condition which can contribute to delayed speech development is what is termed a specific language impairment or language learning disability. Children with this condition will often continue to have trouble with grammar, vocabulary development and sentence formation as they reach preschool age and early elementary school. They generally benefit greatly from speech therapy.

If Общее needs to be specifically translated, you might consider "overall delay in speech development", but perhaps the idea of general/overall is already contained in the term.

agree Kevin Kelly : "delayed speech" got over 7,000 Google hits, "speech retardation" -- 257 hits. Does that tell us something? "Retardation" has begun to fall out of common usage among professionals and lay people, Natalie's 1965 reference notwithstanding.

speech retardation

Peer comment(s):

disagree Dorene Cornwell : retardation is always mental retardation and may or may nto have any relation to speech delayst / delayed speech development

It's always advisable to do some research before using blanket terms like "always" and/or "never". Speech retardation is a commonly used term, albeit not by you, Dorene
neutral Kurt Porter : Dorene is correct about the context...I shy away from using retardation when discussing/translating something about learning disabilities. Why? At least in the U.S.A., professionals in this particular field do the same. "Retarded" = "Autistic" now.

Retarded != Autistic; I know some ppl in the field. While there is some stamina associated with "retardation", so it may not be used in a conversation w/a patient, that's still a correct term for tardiness in development (speech included). Just Google it

I am afraid, you are wrong, Dorene. The term proposed by Dylan is OK, but this one is also widely used. Just do some research
neutral Kurt Porter : Natalie, please see my above note to Alexander. Dylan's note is more than ok here, it's the proper choice, at least in American English (which of course, I'm not insisting is always the best version of the English language). :)

Right, Retarded does mean Autistic, and a child with a speech development disorder IS autistic in more than 90% cases

Notes to Alexander and Natalie:

Alexander, do some research yourself to find even one example of the phrase you proposed. And sites translated by Russian speakers do not count.

Natalie, the examples you cited are not applicable to the Russian context of this question. They are perfectly fine proper examples; they just are not applicable to this question.

To both of you and anyone else: I had to have emergency eye surgery early in the summer and at the moment I am still testing as legally blind. That means I save my research time for projects I am getting paid for. I do not have to volunteer to grade answers at all; I hope you all can bear with me if some of my answers are not drippign with examples right now.
