This may be known as a 12b-1 fee to pay "distribution and marketing" charges, but it is really a trailing commission to the broker who sold you the fund. For this ongoing fee, your broker is supposed to monitor your investment in the fund... Trailing fees are imposed on the current value, not
the original investment.

And from an Australian fund: Some Fund Managers will pay us a small trailing commission for as long as your funds remain invested. This trailing commission is paid from the Fund Manager's normal fees and charges and it does not involve you in any additional outlay.
