the "pre-death" gift AND the full amount bequeathed.

What it means is that if the deceased gave away money before his/her death, that amount should not be deducted from any amount mentioned in the will; it isn't part of the estate because it was given away before the death occured. So whoever inherits keeps

FHS Bridge's FR/EN glossary: rapport succesoral - hotchpot; bring into account against a child's share of an estate of benefits recvd in the deceased's lifetime.

The term set-off is not used in probate & succession, unless actual debts are involved.
