There’s no general feeling. I should be at my peak after over 40 years working as a translator, but some days/weeks/months I feel I’m ascending, others I’m descending or on a plateau. Take your pick!

Descending in the sense that I made the conscious decision to tip my work-life-balance a bit more towards life.

Slowing down. I've been translating for over 50 years and said goodbye to my original contemporaries long ago. I'm still working, but I don't push myself as much as I used to and I don't accept jobs with unreasonable deadlines anymore.

Balance Sep 15, 2020

I agree with the opinions voiced so far. I don't feel I am going any direction in particular. My general principle in life is finding some balance and happiness. I feel lucky enough to have work and being able to manage it quite flexibly.

Being a FT freelance translator is still a very new venture for me, and I feel like I'm already successful. Business has been hot even from when I was mostly reading doom and gloom in the forum posts (particularly with regard to COVID rates and job availability). I get responses very often when I apply, I'm getting paid decent rates, and I'm getting great feedback on my work. Like I am a looser .... Sep 15, 2020

.... when I am reading in the newspaper today that our crown princess receives a state allowance of 1.6 million Euros a year. She is 16 or 17 years old, studying, and still lives at home. Yes, the poor child has to pay for her own clothes. 1.6 million!!!!

I must have done something wrong.

One year I work a lot, the next year I slow down for several reasons (I have a baby - I relocate abroad - I have another baby - a pandemic stikes the world...)

On the plateau... Sep 16, 2020

... where I wanted to be at the almost end of my career. It had been a long, at times rather bumpy ride, but I'm content and happy with where I am right now. Even more so because I had never given up when the ravine was too deep to ever get out of it again. The few times this did happen, I had always managed to not only climb out, but to find new pastures, if you wish. Hopefully my experience will be of assistance to my colleagues who might be at a point right now or in the future where nothing ... See more

Lost... Sep 17, 2020

I haven't had my first experience as a professional translator. I got a job at a call center 2 years ago and I don't know where to start. I'm almost on the breadline. Have you been there? Should I quit my current job to become a translator? Should I stop studying?

an Aardvark Sep 19, 2020

Don't even ask! I just came from the thread about translating a book about animals in alphabetical order, and my mind completed "I feel like I am ... an Aardvark." Well, that would be number one in an alphabetical listing, and a rare creature.

More seriously, I can't answer what's in the poll except for "other" because in translation, work loads are constantly varying. It's been unusually busy since July, when

More seriously, I can't answer what's in the poll except for "other" because in translation, work loads are constantly varying. It's been unusually busy since July, when Ontario went into the highest phase so far during this bizarre pandemic year.
